Why we like it

Earns its place in the toolfarm library by turning ordinary After Effects layers into extrudable, textureable 3D geometry, with mask-driven surface edits and a one-click extrude workflow.

What is 3D Modeler?

3D Modeler is an After Effects plugin from MotionCodes for creating 3D models directly from your layers. It converts polygons in the form of solid, shape, text, and transparency layers into 3D volumes, then lets you extrude any of the surfaces you create. To extrude, you select the desired surface, confirm the depth and offset value, and click the generate button again.

Beyond straight extrusion, you can build cubes, origami shapes, and other geometric forms, and generate complete or incomplete pyramids. Carving and surface changes are handled with masking, and the Change in surface button lets you edit with a mask before extruding inner or outer. Beveling, chamfering, and other modifications are supported, and simplified controls cover color, depth, rotation angle, and more.

Once modeling is done, you can texture the created surfaces individually or in groups: select a surface, click the texturing button, and the surface is precomped with a texturing area ready to use. Cut-out templates, an Origami Cube style with an opening controller, and a Wired Mode round out the feature set. It's listed as free here and runs across After Effects releases from CC 2017 through 2026.

Who is 3D Modeler best for?

3D Modeler is best for after Effects users who want to model and texture 3D geometry from solid, shape, text, and transparency layers.

How much does 3D Modeler cost?

3D Modeler is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does 3D Modeler work with After Effects 2026?

3D Modeler supports a wide range of After Effects releases, including 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, along with CC 2019, CC 2018, and CC 2017. If you're running any of these versions, the plugin is listed as compatible. Because supported releases can shift as After Effects itself updates, it's worth checking the developer's page for the latest compatibility details and any version-specific notes before you install.

How do I extrude a surface in 3D Modeler?

3D Modeler converts polygons from solid, shape, text, and transparency layers into 3D volumes, then lets you extrude any of the created surfaces. Select the surface you want, confirm the depth and offset value, and click the generate button again. There's also a Change in surface button that lets you edit with a mask and then extrude it inner or outer. A demo video is available if you want to follow the workflow.

Can I texture the models I make in 3D Modeler?

3D Modeler lets you texture the surfaces you create, either individually or in groups. After the modeling process, select the desired surface and click the texturing button. The corresponding surface is precomped, and an area for texturing appears for you to work in. Cut-out templates are also included among the features. This texturing step comes after modeling, so you're working on surfaces you've already generated rather than starting from scratch.

What do Origami Cube and Wired Mode do in 3D Modeler?

3D Modeler includes an Origami Cube option that applies an origami style to boxes you've made, with a controller to adjust the opening amount of the box. It also offers a Wired Mode for creating 3D objects in a wired style, and a controller for wired mode settings is added when you use it. Both features sit alongside the core extrusion and texturing tools, giving you extra ways to present the geometry you build.

Is 3D Modeler free?

3D Modeler is listed as free in this catalog. We don't publish a specific price here, so for current licensing terms, any usage conditions, and download details, head to the MotionCodes developer's page. Licensing and terms can change over time, so it's worth confirming the latest information directly with the developer before you rely on the plugin for a project.
