TerrainAxe stands out in the scriptspot library for consolidating terrain road and topology work into eight dedicated tool groups, backed by a road-through-terrain tutorial and support across 3ds Max 9 to 2023.
TerrainAxe is a terrain modeling toolset for 3ds Max, developed by flyingc. It covers a wide range of tasks: smooth roads, flyovers and bridges, stairs and pavements on terrain, hacking clearings, and placing handrails. The developer positions it as quick and easy but powerful, aimed at shortening modeling time, optimizing models, and laying out good topology.
Its capabilities are organized into eight feature groups. Selection tools handle quick vertex, edge and face selection. Creation tools build curbs, runlines, stairs, handrails and pavement pieces. Construct tools change model structure through smoothing roads, rounding and welding vertices, and poly stitching. Cutting tools lay out topology lines and connect vertices, while scene tools create runlines and use AdvArray for handrails, piers, trees and street lamps. Common tools cover object copy-paste and one-key DWG import, alongside material management and UVW mapping tools.
TerrainAxe supports 3ds Max 9 through 2023 (SP2 required for 9 and 2012). A basic tutorial on making roads through terrain and a demo video are available.
TerrainAxe is best for 3ds Max artists modeling terrain-based scenes with roads, bridges, stairs, pavements and handrails, and laying out topology for correct deformation and UVW mapping.
TerrainAxe is completely free to download and use.
TerrainAxe supports 3ds Max versions 9 through 2023. If you are running the oldest supported release, version 9, or 2012, you will need service pack 2 (SP2) installed for the plugin to work. That range covers a long span of 3ds Max releases, so most users on both older and recent installations should be able to run it. For confirmation on your specific build, check the developer's page at flyingcfx.com.
TerrainAxe is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so for the current details and any edition differences it is best to check the developer's page directly. The developer also references basic and Lite editions in its tutorials, where certain tools such as StitchVerts are unavailable in the Lite version and can be substituted with AdvConnectVerts. Reviewing the developer's page will give you the clearest picture of what each edition includes.
TerrainAxe comes with a basic tutorial titled Make Roads Through Terrain, which walks through topologizing a road, smoothing it with the SMRoad tool, conforming it to the terrain, and connecting it using stitching tools. The tutorial notes that in the basic version, SmoothRoad with its user interface can substitute for the SMRoad tools. A downloadable Max file accompanies the tutorial, and a demo video is available. Together these give a practical starting point for the road workflow.
TerrainAxe's recent updates address several fixes and refinements. An issue with subdividing splines that created too many vertices was corrected, and a bug that stopped polystitch, quickStitch and placemesh from working with fewer than 100 vertices was fixed. A missing Straight plus Right arrow was added for the TrafficlineSys. The quickMenu now retains the original order when arranging the menu, and its font size can be adjusted. For the full history, check the developer's page.
