Why we like it

Text At Marker earns its place in the aescripts library for tying text animation directly to markers, with per-marker control over grouping, direction, and easing. Recent updates added the Outwards and Inwards directions and moved to a single-file install.

What is Text At Marker?

Text At Marker is an After Effects script that ties custom text animation to layer markers, letting you decide how many and which words, characters, or lines are animated at each marker. Animation can be triggered using a Delay or via layer markers, applied per word, character, or line.

You can animate in groups by adding a number to a marker, and choose from several directions: Default, Reversed, Outwards, Inwards, Random, or User Defined, where you set the order through the layer name. Multiple effects can be stacked, with keyframes and easing tweaked for each to build the animation you want. Selecting layers targets layer markers, while no selection applies to composition markers, and only markers within the work area are affected.

Only one effect instance is allowed per layer. It works with After Effects CC 2020 and newer, with the Expressions Engine set to JavaScript. Installation and licensing are handled through the aescripts + aeplugins manager app, or the script file can be copied manually into the ScriptUI Panels folder.

Frequently asked questions

Does Text At Marker work with After Effects 2026?

Text At Marker is compatible with After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, and the requirements list After Effects CC 2020 and newer. Alongside a supported version, the Expressions Engine must be set to JavaScript, which you change under Project Settings, Expressions, Expressions Engine. Only one effect instance is allowed per layer, and only markers that sit within the work area are affected by the animation. If you run a version older than CC 2020, it falls outside the supported range.

Does Text At Marker require the JavaScript Expressions Engine?

Text At Marker relies on the JavaScript Expressions Engine, so you need to set it before the script works as intended. Open Project Settings, go to Expressions, then Expressions Engine, and choose JavaScript. This is listed as a requirement alongside After Effects CC 2020 and newer. Keep in mind that only one effect instance is allowed per layer, and only markers inside the work area drive the animation, so it helps to have the engine configured and your markers placed before applying the effect.

How do I install Text At Marker?

Text At Marker can be installed and licensed through the aescripts + aeplugins manager app, described as the easiest route. To install it manually, copy the Text At Marker.jsxbin file into the ScriptUI Panels folder inside your After Effects directory: on Windows that is Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects (Version)\Support Files\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels, and on Mac it is Applications/Adobe After Effects (Version)/Scripts/ScriptUI Panels. After copying, restart After Effects and open the script from Window, Text At Marker. A trial can be added from the Account menu.

Is Text At Marker free, and how does the trial work?

Text At Marker is listed as free here, so you can add it without a purchase. For current licensing terms, check the developer's page. A trial can be added through the Account menu in the aescripts + aeplugins manager app and is valid for 10 days. Installation and licensing are handled through that same manager app, or the script can be installed manually by copying its file into the ScriptUI Panels folder. Setting the Expressions Engine to JavaScript is also required for it to run.
