Why we like it

TextDelay earns its place in the aescripts library for inheriting your animation's easing rather than replacing it, letting delays follow the curves and easing expressions you already set.

What is TextDelay?

TextDelay is a native After Effects plugin that delays text animation by character, word or line. Unlike the default text animator, it inherits your animation's easing, so you can work with custom curves or easing expressions.

The plugin includes five order modifiers and can delay position, anchor, scale, opacity, hue and blur. A range selector controls which characters, words or lines receive the delay and which don't. Its transformations cover X and Y position, anchor, scale, Z position and rotation, and TextDelay stays compatible with motion blur. It also works with parented transforms on CC2018 and newer, and with paragraph text.

TextDelay handles styled type, including text with a stroke outline, bold and italic, faux bold and faux italics, and multicoloured text. It is compatible with Ease & Wizz, animationPatterns and iExpressions. Version 1.8.0 fixed compatibility with self-intersecting and variable fonts and updated the license framework.

Who is TextDelay best for?

TextDelay is best for after Effects artists animating text who want to stagger a single animation across characters, words or lines while keeping its easing.

How much does TextDelay cost?

TextDelay is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does TextDelay support?

TextDelay runs on a wide range of After Effects versions: 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019 and CC 2018. Version 1.8.0, released on December 5, 2025, fixed compatibility with self-intersecting and variable fonts and updated the license framework. As a native plugin, it delays text animation by character, word or line while inheriting your animation's easing. Check the developer's page for the current release before installing.

Does TextDelay work with parented transforms and paragraph text?

TextDelay is compatible with parented transforms on After Effects CC2018 and newer, and it also works with paragraph text. Its transformations include X and Y position, anchor, scale, Z position and rotation, and it can delay anchor, scale, opacity, hue and blur alongside position. TextDelay stays compatible with motion blur as well, so a single animation can be spread across characters, words or lines while keeping those properties intact.

Is TextDelay free to use?

TextDelay is listed as free in this catalog, so you can add it to your After Effects setup without a purchase. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for current details before you download. TextDelay works alongside tools such as Ease & Wizz, animationPatterns and iExpressions, and inherits your animation's easing so you can drive delays with custom curves or easing expressions.

Does TextDelay work with styled and multicoloured text?

TextDelay works with styled type, including text with a stroke outline, bold and italic, faux bold and faux italics, and multicoloured text. Its range selector controls which characters, words or lines receive the delay and which don't. Five order modifiers change the sequence of the delay. Version 1.7 added stroke features, and version 1.8.0 fixed compatibility with self-intersecting and variable fonts, so a variety of fonts are supported.
