Type is a toolset for animating text layers inside After Effects. It covers a range of text-animation tasks: highlighting and underlining text, adding a blinking cursor, formatting numbers, applying monospacing, creating a text box, and splitting text by word.
Its highlight, underline, and strikethrough functions target each iteration of a selection, and the Typewriter and Blinky effects retain character styling. Blinky also supports multi-line text. Number formatting includes optional leading zeros for time counters, and a time counter can be paused with shift + click. Typing tags automatically add markers on every frame the text changes, while a separate function creates shapes from text by generating a shape layer for each necessary frame of animation.
Type runs in After Effects 2020 through 2025 and is listed as free in this catalog. A demo video is available. Version 1.6.1 rolls the tool back to the 1.5.2 codebase while the developer addresses some critical bugs.
