wk_mechanics stands out in the superhive library for covering the full path from widget-based design to CAM profiles, editable blueprints and SVG export for fabrication, all inside Blender.
wk_mechanics is a Blender add-on for designing, simulating and fabricating real mechanical linkages without leaving the software. You build mechanisms from modular widgets, including linkages, levers, sliders, walking mechanisms, drawing machines, multi-layer assemblies and custom automata, with no manual rigging or complex constraint setup required. A single click turns a widget layout into a fully functional mechanical rig, so you can test movement, explore variations and iterate before committing to physical fabrication.
One of its more unusual features is CAM generation from real motion: animate a mechanism, record the resulting movement, and wk_mechanics automatically creates CAM profiles that reproduce the same motion mechanically. Multi-layer designs use Rod widgets and duplication tools to keep synchronized linkage systems aligned across different Z-levels.
When a design is ready, wk_mechanics converts it into editable blueprint parts with link lengths, pivot locations and hole positions at custom diameters, then exports to SVG for vector editing, laser cutting, CNC machining or scroll saw projects. Included example presets cover drawing machines, walking mechanisms, lever systems, scissor mechanisms, motion transfer chains and CAM workflows, so you can load a working setup and modify it.
Wk_Mechanics - Mechanical Linkage, Cam Designer & Automata is best for makers, laser-cut enthusiasts, CNC users, kinetic artists, automata builders and STEM educators working inside Blender.
Wk_Mechanics - Mechanical Linkage, Cam Designer & Automata is completely free to download and use.
wk_mechanics converts mechanisms into blueprint parts and exports them directly to SVG, which suits laser cutting, CNC machining and scroll saw projects. The blueprints include link lengths, pivot locations and hole positions with custom diameters, and they stay editable before final export. Once exported, you can open the SVG in any vector application to handle final styling and manufacturing preparation, using Blender as the mechanical design environment and your favourite vector editor for the finishing steps.
wk_mechanics ships with example presets covering drawing machines, walking mechanisms, lever systems, scissor mechanisms, motion transfer chains and CAM workflows. The intended approach is to learn by modifying working mechanisms: load a preset, create PinJoins, experiment with proportions and rebuild the rig to explore new behaviours. Because you begin from a functioning setup rather than an empty scene, you can see how the widget-based components connect and transfer motion before building your own designs from scratch.
wk_mechanics handles multi-layer mechanical design using Rod widgets and duplication tools, letting you build synchronized linkage systems across different Z-levels while keeping alignment. Multi-layer setups can become complex, and while the Rod widget works well in most situations, not every widget combination has been tested. If a setup refuses to cooperate, the developer suggests inserting the Rod at a different location in the chain, since there is often more than one valid way to transfer motion between layers.
wk_mechanics generates CAM profiles from real motion. You animate a mechanism, record the resulting movement, and it automatically produces CAM profiles that reproduce the same motion mechanically later. This is described as one of its most unique features and fits drawing machines, mechanical toys, automata, motion programming and kinetic sculptures. Because the profiles come from motion you have already tested in 3D, the mechanical result is derived from a movement you designed inside Blender rather than defined by hand.
wk_mechanics is listed as free here. Licensing can change over time, so check the developer's page for current terms before relying on it for a project. The download covers the full workflow: widget-based mechanism design, automatic rig generation, CAM generation from motion, blueprint creation with SVG export, and example presets you can load and modify. Together these take you from digital design to fabrication-ready output for laser cutting, CNC and scroll saw projects.
