Why we like it

Earns its place in the aescripts library for turning manual layer picking into filter-based selection, with scope controls and follow-up actions like solo, lock and visibility toggles.

What is Advanced Selection?

Advanced Selection is an After Effects tool that expands how you select layers. It offers a large set of filters you can combine to narrow a selection, including layer types, layer options, blending modes, search by name, and label colors.

Beyond those, it covers specific layer states — adjustment layers, null objects, guide layers, 2D and 3D layers, motion blur on or off, track matte relationships, even or odd layers, and parent status. You choose how far the selection reaches: just the active composition, the active comp plus one level into precomps, recursively through all precomps, or every composition in the project. Once layers are matched, you can toggle Visibility Control for video and audio, Set Solo, and Lock Layers directly.

On aescripts it holds a popularity rank of 286. Version 1.5 was last updated on December 30, 2021, and it lists compatibility with After Effects 2024 back through CC 2019. A demo video is available.

Who is Advanced Selection best for?

Advanced Selection is best for after Effects users who need to select layers by attributes — type, blending mode, label color, name, parent status and more — across a single comp or an entire project.

How much does Advanced Selection cost?

Advanced Selection is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Advanced Selection work with After Effects 2024?

Advanced Selection lists compatibility with After Effects 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and CC 2019, so recent CC releases through the 2024 version are covered. If you run a build older than CC 2019, check the developer's page before installing, since versions outside this range aren't listed. The current release is 1.5, last updated December 30, 2021, so newer After Effects versions released after that date aren't reflected in the listed compatibility.

How far into precomps can Advanced Selection reach?

Advanced Selection gives you four scope options for a selection. 'Just Active Comp' works only inside the currently active composition. 'Active Comp +1' extends one level deeper into precomps. 'Recursive' reaches through all precomps, including precomps of precomps. 'All Comps' selects inside every composition in the whole project. You pick the scope that matches how deeply your layers are nested before running the selection with the 'Select Layer' button.

What can Advanced Selection do with layers once they are selected?

Advanced Selection can act on matched layers beyond selecting them. Visibility Control enables or disables the video (eye symbol) and audio (loudspeaker symbol) settings. Set Solo turns the Solo setting on or off. Lock Layers toggles the Lock setting. You trigger the filtered selection with the 'Select Layer' button, then apply these controls to the layers that match your chosen filters.

Is Advanced Selection free?

Advanced Selection is listed as free in this catalog. For the latest licensing terms, download details, and any conditions attached to its use, check the developer's page on aescripts, since terms can change over time. The tool is developed by Gregor Urabl and runs inside After Effects, with the current release being version 1.5, last updated December 30, 2021. A demo video is also available on the developer's listing if you want to see it in action first.
