Why we like it

Timelord earns its place in the toolfarm library for bringing Overlord-style layer transfer to frame-by-frame animation across Photoshop, Animate and After Effects. Note that Battle Axe has confirmed no further updates are planned and it requires Photoshop 2024 or below.

What is Battle Axe Timelord?

Battle Axe Timelord moves Photoshop and Animate layers directly into an After Effects comp and simplifies frame-based animation. Built on the layer transfer systems made popular in Overlord and AEUX, it renders timeline layers to disk and automatically imports them into After Effects.

Transfers run in several directions: Photoshop and Animate timelines send selected layers to After Effects as PNG sequences and SWFs, After Effects comps return as MP4 reference renders, and Photoshop layers move across much like Overlord. For drawn work, matching toolbars in Photoshop and Animate let you add, remove, duplicate, split and clear frames with the same behaviors, adjust frame duration, and roll the edit point between frames while keeping layer length intact. You can create timelines to match After Effects comps or the reverse, and toolbars are customizable for more niche workflows.

Timelord requires Photoshop CC2024 and below, since Adobe dropped ZXP support in Photoshop 2025, and it still runs in Adobe Animate. Battle Axe has confirmed no further updates are planned.

Frequently asked questions

Does Battle Axe Timelord work with Photoshop 2025?

Battle Axe Timelord does not run in Photoshop 2025, because Adobe dropped ZXP extension support starting in that version. It requires Photoshop CC2024 and below and is compatible with Photoshop, Animate and After Effects across the CC2019 to 2024 range. If you work in Adobe Animate, Timelord still runs there and transfers layers as expected. Before buying, Battle Axe notes you should be on Photoshop 2024 or below, or using Animate.

What Photoshop and Animate versions does Battle Axe Timelord support?

Battle Axe Timelord supports Photoshop and Animate from CC2019 through 2024, alongside After Effects. It does not work in Photoshop 2025, where Adobe removed ZXP support. Within the supported range, it transfers layers between Photoshop or Animate and After Effects and manages frame-based animation. In Animate, Timelord continues to run and transfer layers regardless of the Photoshop limitation, so Animate users are not affected by the 2025 Photoshop cutoff.

Will Battle Axe Timelord receive future updates?

Battle Axe Timelord will not receive new versions. Along with ZXP being removed from Photoshop, the inter-app Adobe transfer system it relies on has also been removed, so Battle Axe is instead working on expanding Overlord to cover the gap between Photoshop and After Effects. You can still buy Timelord as long as you accept there will be no updates and you use Photoshop 2024 and below, or use Animate.

Is Battle Axe Timelord free?

Battle Axe Timelord is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing and purchase details, check the developer's page, since terms can change. Battle Axe notes the tool can still be bought as long as you understand there will be no further updates and you use Photoshop 2024 and below, or use Animate. The most recent maintenance update stabilized the license authentication system.
