cebas psd-manager stands out in the toolfarm library for pulling render elements and Deep-Data masks straight into a layered PSD, and version 5's Save Now workflow means you no longer have to wait until a render finishes to save the framebuffer and masks.
cebas psd-manager adds the render elements of a 3ds Max scene as layers to a PSD file, with presets and automatic layer sorting to set up the correct layer order. You can also control blending modes and layer order manually, and decide for each render element whether it is exported and how. Because it relies on 3ds Max core capabilities such as the G-Buffer and render elements, it stays fast and open to all renderers.
Version 5 introduces a Save Now workflow that lets you save the framebuffer and masks at any time rather than only after rendering finishes. It adds support for V-Ray 5, 6 and 7, new GPU renderers including FStorm, Redshift and V-Ray GPU, smaller PSD file sizes and faster saving. Supported renderers include V-Ray, Corona, Scanline, FStorm, Redshift and mental ray.
Its Deep-Data Masks feature (MatteShooter) produces hundreds of anti-aliased masks using little memory, generated from objects, materials, 3ds Max layers or named selection sets, and requires V-Ray or the Scanline renderer. The result is a PSD you can readjust for one or multiple objects and materials in post.
cebas psd-manager is best for 3ds Max artists who need render elements and accurate anti-aliased object and material masks delivered as editable PSD layers for post-production changes.
cebas psd-manager is completely free to download and use.
cebas psd-manager is compatible with Autodesk 3ds Max 2016 through 2025, so recent releases including 3ds Max 2025 are covered. It runs inside 3ds Max and exports your scene's render elements and masks to a PSD file that you can open in Photoshop, After Effects or any other application that supports PSD files. If you are on a version within that range, you can use the render element output, layer sorting and mask features as described. For the latest details on supported builds, check the developer's page at cebas.com.
cebas psd-manager supports V-Ray, Corona, Scanline, FStorm, Redshift and mental ray. Version 5 added several GPU renderers, including FStorm, Redshift and V-Ray GPU, alongside support for V-Ray 5, 6 and 7, with V-Ray 7 supported as of psd-manager 5.0.4. It relies on 3ds Max core capabilities such as the G-Buffer and render elements, which keeps it open to all renderers. Some features carry renderer requirements: the Deep-Data Masks, for example, need V-Ray or the Scanline renderer. Check the developer's page for the current renderer list.
cebas psd-manager generates its Deep-Data Masks, part of the MatteShooter feature, using deep data, and this specific feature requires either V-Ray or the Scanline renderer. With it you can produce hundreds of anti-aliased masks that use little memory, created from objects, materials, 3ds Max layers or named selection sets. Other parts of psd-manager, such as exporting render elements as PSD layers or channels, work more broadly because the plugin relies on 3ds Max core capabilities. If you plan to lean on Deep-Data Masks, make sure your scene uses V-Ray or Scanline.
cebas psd-manager version 5 introduces a Save Now workflow that lets you save the framebuffer and masks at any time, not only after a render finishes. It adds support for V-Ray 5, 6 and 7 and several new GPU renderers, including FStorm, Redshift and V-Ray GPU, along with smaller PSD file sizes and faster saving. The V-Ray integration includes direct access to the V-Ray Framebuffer, mask generation from deep data, and MultiMattes split into multiple layers or channels and automatically named. The current release is psd-manager 5.0.4.
cebas psd-manager is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing and purchase terms can change, and the developer describes version 5.0.4 as available for purchase, so for the current and authoritative licensing details it's best to check the developer's page at cebas.com. There you can also find the psd-manager community on Discord, where you can reach the developer and other version 5 users. Whatever the licensing, the plugin's role is the same: exporting 3ds Max render elements and anti-aliased masks into layered PSD files for post-production work.
