Why we like it

Pixel Pusher earns its place in the toolfarm library as a preset-driven, ball-based template rather than a full particle plugin. Its limits are stated plainly, which helps set expectations before you commit to a look.

What is Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher?

Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher is a template for Adobe After Effects that builds each design, or element, from a limited number of small balls. It is best suited for abstract designs and animations, or for using on footage. The template ships with 41 design presets covering unique animations, including all of the animations from the demo video.

The presets can be customized with slider controls, and detailed instructions are found throughout the template. Each preset also includes multiple optional effects you can unhide to create new looks. Separate project files are included in HD (1920×1080) and 4K (4096×2048), and other resolutions can be reached by changing the resolution of comps, precomps, and solid layers.

It is compatible with After Effects v.17.0 (2020) and all later versions, works on both PCs and Macs, and needs no plugins. Since it has been universalized, it runs in After Effects in any language. New particles are not continuously generated, and you cannot move individual balls to form specific shapes, so it centers on abstract, ball-based designs.

Frequently asked questions

Does Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher work with After Effects 2020?

Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher is compatible with Adobe After Effects v.17.0 (2020) and all later versions. It runs on both PCs and Macs, and no additional plugins are required. Because it has been universalized, it also works in After Effects running in any language. The download includes separate project files in HD (1920×1080) and 4K (4096×2048), and other resolutions can be reached by changing the resolution of comps, the corresponding precomps, and solid layers. Detailed instructions are found throughout the template to guide setup.

Do I need to install Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher?

Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher is not a plugin, so there is nothing to install. It is an Adobe After Effects project file, commonly called a template, where most of the work is already done and you make your own customizations. Detailed instructions are found throughout the template, and a video tutorial is available to walk you through it. A Presets Preview.pdf file is also included so you can quickly browse preview images of each preset. A demo video is available as well.

Can Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher form specific 3D shapes or solid wireframe landscapes?

Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher builds each design, or element, from a limited number of small balls and does not have all the capabilities of a high-end particle plugin. You cannot move individual balls to form specific 3D objects or shapes, and it cannot create networks of dots and lines. New particles are not continuously generated. It can produce the retro wireframe landscape look, though the hills are not solid since you can see through the spaces between the balls. Adding more balls by raising an element's resolution increases render time.

Is Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher free to use commercially?

Creation Effects: Pixel Pusher is listed as free here; check the developer's page for current licensing terms. The animations you create with the product are yours and can be used for commercial purposes. However, sharing or posting the project files online with or for anyone other than a client is prohibited, and the template contains copyrighted intellectual property. See the Terms and Conditions on the developer's page for full details. Note that the footage and music in the demo video are not included.
