Why we like it

Fast Housing earns its place in the autodesk_apps library by generating an entire house as a single procedural FAHouse object you can render, deform and convert to mesh, with control over roofs, facades, windows and trims.

What is FAST HOUSING?

Fast Housing is a script for 3ds Max that builds a custom procedural mesh, generating a house structure whose parameters can be changed while the results update in real time. It offers an easy, intuitive way to create houses at a simple level, and its versatility lets you shape your own architectural style, useful for the creation of urban backgrounds.

The script produces a FAHouse object that works like any Autodesk 3ds Max object: it is renderable, any deformer can be applied, and it can be converted to mesh. Customizable parts include the base shape, with facades B and D controlled by angles, and a roof with break point, extensions and asymmetric options, alongside terraces, beams, arches, surrounds, frames, balconies, shutters, roof windows and chimneys.

Windows can be placed horizontally or vertically, corner windows are supported, and window parameters can be copied and pasted. Every part carries its own material ID, some parts include UV mapping and tiling, and geometry can be optimized to cut polygons and vertices. Parameters and roof templates save to external files, with autobackup, and Oblong and Oblong Void primitives are included.

Key features

  • Creates a FAHouse object that works like any 3ds Max object: renderable, accepts any deformer, and can be converted to mesh
  • Customizable base shape with facades B and D controlled by angles, plus a roof with break point, extensions and asymmetric options
  • Additional parts including terrace, beams, arch, surround, frame, balcony, shutters, roof windows and chimneys, all editable in real time
  • Windows added horizontally or vertically, with corner windows and copy/paste of window parameters
  • Per-part material IDs (some customizable) and built-in UV mapping and tiling on some parts
  • Optimize geometry option to reduce polygon and vertex counts, plus multiply-all-distances to match scene units
  • Save/Load parameters and roof templates to external files with autobackup, plus Oblong and Oblong Void primitives

Frequently asked questions

Does Fast Housing work with 3ds Max 2025?

Fast Housing added 2025 support in version 2.1.2, so it runs with 3ds Max 2025. That same update also fixed materials so they work correctly with 3ds Max 2021, and resolved an error that appeared under Window Customize > Frame when no window was selected. For the full range of supported 3ds Max releases and any newer changes, check the developer's page.

Can the house Fast Housing creates be rendered and edited like a normal 3ds Max object?

Fast Housing creates a FAHouse object that works as any Autodesk 3ds Max object. It is renderable, any deformer can be applied to it, and it can be converted to mesh, so it fits into a standard 3ds Max scene. Geometry can also be optimized to reduce the number of polygons and vertices, and all distances can be multiplied at once to adapt the model to your scene units.

How does Fast Housing handle materials and texturing?

Fast Housing gives every part of the house its own material ID, which makes texturing easier, and some parts have a customizable material ID. Some parts also include their own UV mapping and UV tiling. In version 2.1.2 the materials were fixed to work correctly with 3ds Max 2021. Together these options let you assign and manage textures across the different sections of the generated house.

Can I save and reuse house settings in Fast Housing?

Fast Housing can save and load its parameters in an external file, and it includes an autobackup that automatically saves all parameters to a loadable external file. You can also save and load your own roof templates, and copy and paste window parameters between windows. These utilities let you keep and reapply configurations rather than rebuilding them from scratch each time you work on a house.

Is Fast Housing free to use?

Fast Housing is listed as free here. Licensing is set by the developer, Christophe Blattmann, and can change over time, so check his page for the current terms. The most recent version noted is 2.1.2, released on 2024-05-30, which added 3ds Max 2025 support along with fixes to materials in 3ds Max 2021 and to a Window Customize > Frame error.
