FilmConvert Nitrate earns its place for pairing camera-adaptive film stock emulations with grain that's modeled per color and exposure rather than overlaid, alongside a full LOG pipeline and custom curves for deeper control.
FilmConvert Nitrate brings film stock emulations and grain to footage inside After Effects and Premiere Pro. Its film stock emulations are built from a selection of film stocks, and Nitrate analyzes the camera you shot on to adapt each stock to that camera's color science, with dedicated camera packs covering major camera brands. The basic FilmConvert features remain for quick results, while the Nitrate feature set adds more advanced controls.
The Nitrate set includes Cineon Log versions of the original film stock emulations, so you can dial contrast and saturation back while keeping the authentic film stock colors. Full custom curve controls let you modify highlight and shadow roll-offs or adjust individual channels through a full LOG image processing pipeline. Rather than overlaying grain, Nitrate models the amount required for each color and exposure, with grain response controls for highlights, midtones and shadows plus overall softness and saturation.
You can export your grade as a 3D LUT for on-set monitor visualization or to share with others on your project. Halation is available as a separate add-on that mimics how halation occurs on film by tracing the light through your image.
FilmConvert Nitrate for After Effects and Premiere Pro is best for editors and colorists working in After Effects and Premiere Pro who want film stock emulation, modeled film grain and custom curve control on digital footage.
FilmConvert Nitrate for After Effects and Premiere Pro is completely free to download and use.
FilmConvert Nitrate runs inside After Effects and Premiere Pro and is compatible with Adobe Creative Cloud 2018 or later on both Windows and macOS. On Windows it needs Windows 10 or 11 with CUDA 10.1 or later, or OpenCL 1.1 or later. On Mac it runs on macOS 10.15 or later and is Apple Silicon compatible. If your Adobe apps are on CC 2018 or a newer release, FilmConvert Nitrate fits into your existing Adobe workflow.
FilmConvert Nitrate is compatible cross-platform. On Windows it needs Windows 10 or 11, After Effects or Premiere Pro CC 2018 or later, and either CUDA 10.1 or later or OpenCL 1.1 or later. On Mac it needs macOS 10.15 or later with After Effects or Premiere Pro CC 2018 or later, and it's Apple Silicon compatible. FilmConvert also maintains camera profiles across major camera manufacturers, so check the developer's current camera list to confirm your model is covered.
FilmConvert Nitrate's license does not include Halation. Halation is offered as a separate add-on that you can attach to your license during the purchase process for an add-on price. The feature mimics how halation occurs on film by tracing the light coming through your image to determine where and how it should appear, and its settings are customizable from the defaults to your own preferences. For current details on adding Halation, check the developer's page.
FilmConvert Nitrate can export your grade as a 3D LUT. LUTs let you take a grade to other devices and compatible software: you can load a 3D LUT onto a monitor for on-set visualization to preview the look you'll apply in post-production, or share the grade with others working on your project. This sits alongside Nitrate's grading tools, including its film stock emulations, custom curve controls and grain response controls.
FilmConvert Nitrate is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing for FilmConvert products can change, and the Halation feature is a separate paid add-on, so check the developer's page for current licensing and any add-on options before you download. There you'll also find the current camera profile list and platform requirements to confirm compatibility with your After Effects or Premiere Pro setup on Windows or macOS.
