Why we like it

GridGen earns its place in the toolfarm library by packing grid generation, color theming, export, and Element 3D prep into one After Effects panel, though its 3D templates depend on the separately available Element 3D.

What is GothLab GridGen?

GothLab GridGen is a procedural grid system generator that builds shape-based layouts directly inside After Effects. It ships with 16+ built-in generative tools, 200+ curated color themes, and 60+ presets covering effects, animation, and Element 3D templates. Grid recursion depth, split behavior, symmetry, and composition balance are all adjustable, and batch generation splits a grid into multiple parts across separate layers.

The toolset includes a Camera Rig for centralized 3D camera control with shake, isometric toggle, and optional layer tracking, plus a Light Rig with three orbiting lights and individual intensity, radius, and color controls. Tiler arranges layers into rows or columns, Stacker converts layers to 3D and stacks them along the Z-axis, and the E3D Boilerplate auto-generates the layers needed to prep shape layers for Element 3D. Master controllers handle visibility, scale, extrusion, position, offset, stroke, and color.

Finished work can be exported as PNG up to 16K, SVG vector, or AI for use in external programs. Element 3D templates come as .aep files with Essential Graphics panels, and the plugin requires the separately available Element 3D. GridGen is compatible with After Effects 2022 through 2025.

Who is GothLab GridGen best for?

GothLab GridGen is best for motion designers building procedural grid layouts, HUD graphics, tech backgrounds, and 3D or symmetrical compositions in After Effects.

Frequently asked questions

Does GothLab GridGen work with After Effects 2025?

GothLab GridGen is compatible with After Effects 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, with 2022 as the minimum supported version. It has been tested on AE 2022, 2024, and 2025. The bundled Element 3D templates are supplied as .aep files, so working with them means running one of these supported releases. If you are on a version of After Effects earlier than 2022, GridGen will not be compatible, so confirm your release before installing.

Does GothLab GridGen require the Element 3D plugin?

GothLab GridGen requires the Element 3D plugin for its 3D features, and Element 3D is not included; it is available separately. The bundled Element 3D templates are .aep files built with Element 3D v2.2, complete with prebuilt lights and controllers ready for import. The templates come with Essential Graphics panels for animation and geometry control, and the 3D extrusion workflows depend on Element 3D v2 being installed to run. If you plan to use the 3D side of GridGen, install Element 3D before importing the templates.

What export formats does GothLab GridGen support?

GothLab GridGen exports finished layouts as PNG at resolutions from HD up to 16K, as SVG vector files, and as AI files for use in external programs. Batch generation can split a grid into multiple parts across separate layers before export, and you can either export images as-is or combine them into textures. This gives you raster output for high-resolution renders alongside vector output for editing outside After Effects.

Is GothLab GridGen free?

GothLab GridGen is listed as free in this catalog. Since licensing terms can change, check the developer's page for the current details before downloading. Keep in mind that GridGen relies on the Element 3D plugin for its 3D templates and extrusion features, and Element 3D is a separate product that is not included, so plan for that separately if you intend to use the 3D side of the tool.

What do the Tiler and Stacker tools in GothLab GridGen do?

GothLab GridGen's Tiler divides layers into tidy groups and arranges them in rows or columns for clean tiled layouts. The Stacker converts layers to 3D and stacks them along the Z-axis, with adjustable spacing and multiple stacking modes. Both sit alongside GridGen's other tools, including a Camera Rig for centralized 3D camera control and a Light Rig with three orbiting lights, giving you several ways to organize and light shape-based compositions inside After Effects.
