Limber earns its place for being designed and maintained by Steve and Mike, two experienced character animators, with a YouTube training series and a thorough online User Guide backing it up.
Limber is an add-on rigging tool for After Effects that makes animating 2D characters quicker and easier. Limbs are shape layers you can generate in a couple of clicks: draw a bendy path and click a button, or take three circles and two art layers for a limb with rotating joints.
Once created, limbs are infinitely scalable, can be duplicated in seconds, made stretchy or not, and foreshortened, and they rotate around the joint. A limb's appearance can be copied and pasted to another limb, and hand and feet layers can rotate along with it automatically. Limber 2 rigs vector art, raster art, bendy paths, puppet-pins and faux-3D tapers, and includes over 100 presets in the Limb Library.
Three animation modes cover different needs: IK, FK and FreeK. Limber is designed and maintained by Steve and Mike, two experienced character animators, with a YouTube training series, an online User Guide and a Discord community for support.
Limber is best for character animators building and animating 2D characters in After Effects.
Limber is completely free to download and use.
Limber supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019 and CC 2018. Those same versions are listed as its requirement, so the plugin is meant to run inside your existing After Effects install across nine releases. If you're on one of them, you should be covered. For the most current compatibility details, check the developer's page before installing your copy.
Limber is listed as free in this catalog. The developer also provides a free version of the tool alongside a 10-day trial, with the trial limited to two limbs per comp, FK and Joint controllers disabled, and no copy-and-paste of customized limb layers. For current licensing terms and exactly what each option includes, head to the developer's page, since availability and conditions can change over time.
Limber rigs limbs from shape layers, and Limber 2 extends that to bitmap layers, .ai layers, puppet-pinned layers and precomps. For raster layers you can use either rigging method, with no need to move anchor points or parent anything. The Rig & Pose and Path to Bone methods let you rig almost any limb, including raster ones, so a wide range of artwork can be turned into animatable limbs.
Limber offers three animation modes. IK supports stretchy limbs, anti-pop to smooth tricky walk cycles, and separate lengths for foreshortening. FK handles overlapping wave motion, breaking of joints, cross-body moves and arcs. FreeK is for front walk and run cycles, automated natural elbows, and dimensional moves that aren't possible on IK or FK. Together they cover a range of character animation approaches within the same rig.
Limber's trial lasts 10 days and is limited to two limbs per comp. FK and Joint controllers are disabled during the trial, and you cannot copy and paste customized limb layers. There is also a free version of Limber available separately. For full details on the trial, the free version and licensing options, check the developer's page before deciding which route fits your work.
