Pixelocybe sits at rank 106 in the aescripts library. It earns its place by combining mosaic and displacement distortion with luminance and per-channel controls in a single filter that runs in both After Effects and Premiere Pro.
Pixelocybe is a hybrid mosaic and displacement filter for After Effects and Premiere Pro, built by Satori. It works through a flexible two-input pipeline and can read distortion from a pixel's overall luminance or from individual colour channels, producing trippy pixel-based visuals.
Channel modes cover Luma, which applies the effect equally across all channels using a pixel's overall luminance; RGB, which processes each colour component separately; and dedicated Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha options that affect just the selected channel. Mosaic Width and Height set the maximum block size, while Mosaic Curve Phase offsets the curve by a set number of degrees and Curve Floor defines the minimum mosaic distortion. Horizontal and Vertical Offset shift where the mosaic intensity is read from.
Transparency controls turn pixels below or above a set luminosity transparent, with a Transparency Phase to offset where those thresholds start and finish and Transparency Smoothing to ease sharp transitions between transparent and opaque areas. Version 1.3.0 covers After Effects and Premiere Pro releases from CS6 through 2026, and a demo video is available.
Pixelocybe is best for motion designers and editors who want mosaic and displacement-based pixel distortion inside After Effects or Premiere Pro.
Pixelocybe is completely free to download and use.
Pixelocybe supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and the CC releases back through CC 2014, plus CS6. That range covers current versions alongside older installations, so most After Effects setups can run it. The same version span applies to Premiere Pro, from 2026 down to CS6. Check the developer's page to confirm the current build against your exact release before installing.
Pixelocybe runs in Premiere Pro across versions 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, the CC releases, and CS6, matching its After Effects support. A universal macOS binary added Apple silicon support for both Premiere Pro and After Effects. If you work across both applications, the same mosaic and displacement controls are available in each. Confirm the current release details on the developer's page.
Pixelocybe is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change, so check the developer's page on aescripts for current terms before you download. Its Aescripts framework handles license checks, and the 1.3.0 update moved to framework v4.0.7 for improved stability of those checks. If you plan to use it in production, review the license conditions there to be sure you have the right registration for your setup.
Pixelocybe's Luma channel mode applies the effect to all channels equally using the overall luminance of a pixel. Alongside it, RGB mode processes each of the red, green, and blue components separately, and the Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha options affect just the selected channel. These modes determine how the mosaic and displacement distortion reads from the image, giving you either uniform treatment or channel-by-channel control.
Pixelocybe 1.3.0, released August 1, 2023, added a Curve Phase Split for RGB filtering, giving an additional curve phase shift for the R and B components. The update also fixed a crash affecting the unregistered version with composition heights over 4096 pixels, resolved an unwanted image flash when using transparency phase under certain conditions, and moved to Aescripts framework v4.0.7 for improved license-check stability.
