Cartoon Moblur earns its place in the toolfarm library as a purpose-built alternative to the Echo effect for flat, 2D-style motion blur.
Cartoon Moblur is an After Effects plugin from Plugin Everything that adds a stylish motion trail to your graphics. It behaves like regular motion blur, but with a more cartoony look suited to flat, minimal, 2D and cell styles. The blur is generated from your transformation animation, and it works well on logos, transitions and iconography.
You control the effect through a handful of parameters: shutter angle for the length of the blur, color as a fill or gradient ramp, plus opacity and a samples setting for quality. Since version 1.5, it is compatible with all transformations, including 3D, as well as parented animation and bezier path animation. An alternate motion source parameter lets you apply the effect to an adjustment layer so it affects all layers underneath.

Cartoon Moblur works with 3D layers as of version 1.5, which made it compatible with all transformations, including 3D. Earlier versions were limited to 2D rotation and to X and Y position and anchor transforms. Version 1.5 also added compatibility with parented animation, an alternate motion source parameter, and bezier path animation. One requirement carries over from version 1.0: the input layer must have collapse transformations switched on.
Cartoon Moblur requires the input layer to have collapse transformations switched on. This requirement has remained in place since version 1.0 and continues in version 1.5. Beyond that, the blur is generated from your transformation animation, so it responds to the movement you keyframe. If the effect isn't appearing as expected, confirming that collapse transformations is enabled on the layer is a sensible first check.
Cartoon Moblur added native support for ARM chips, including Apple Silicon, in version 1.6.2. Version 1.6.1 added support for multi-frame rendering in After Effects 2022 along with bug fixes, and version 1.6.3 updated the license framework. If you're running After Effects on an Apple Silicon Mac, that native ARM support applies from version 1.6.2 onward. To benefit from these updates, install the latest release and check the developer's page to confirm the current version.
