Why we like it

POP Captions earns its spot in the aescripts library as a focused caption-animation tool for After Effects. Keeping every controller on one layer and syncing font settings across layers cuts down on jumping between the text and background layers.

What is POP Captions?

POP Captions is an After Effects plugin from L22Design for animating captions. You select a text layer and click to make it pop, with all the controllers kept on a single layer.

Font and font size stay synced between layers, so you don't need to touch the background layer separately. A checkbox can automatically calculate how many words to pop based on the number of words on your text layer, and another checkbox controls whether the caption background animates. Background and text colors are set individually.

Version 2.0 was released on January 21, 2026, and lists compatibility with After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, and 2023. This version fixed a bug where the expressions did not work in After Effects running in languages other than English. A demo video is available on the developer's page.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does POP Captions support?

POP Captions lists compatibility with After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, and 2023, so it covers the current release along with the three prior versions. Version 2.0 was released on January 21, 2026. If you run one of those four versions, the tool is built to work with your setup. For any other release, or to confirm the latest supported versions, check L22Design's page on aescripts before installing.

Is POP Captions free to use?

POP Captions is listed as free in this catalog, so you can add it to your After Effects setup without a purchase noted here. Licensing terms can change over time, so it's worth checking L22Design's page on aescripts for the current details before you download. That page is also where you'll find the demo video and the version history if you want to see what the tool covers.

Does POP Captions work in After Effects set to a language other than English?

POP Captions version 2.0 fixed a bug where the expressions did not work in After Effects running in languages other than English. If you use a non-English installation, that fix in the 2.0 release is meant to keep the expressions working correctly. This was part of the same update that placed all the controllers on a single layer. For the full change history, L22Design's page lists what version 2.0 changed.

How does POP Captions decide how many words to pop?

POP Captions includes a checkbox that automatically calculates how many words to pop based on the number of words on your text layer. Rather than setting that count by hand, you enable the option and it reads the word count from the layer you selected. The tool also keeps font and font size synced between layers, so you don't need to touch the background layer separately when you make changes.
