Why we like it

RE:Flex holds a spot in toolfarm's popularity ranking and comes from RE:Vision Effects, makers of Twixtor — whose tracking powers its automatic alignment feature. It's also included in the RE:Vision Effects Effections bundles.

What is RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex?

RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex creates morphs and warps in After Effects, DaVinci Resolve and Fusion. Rather than asking you to build meshes or learn a new interface, it uses the host program's own drawing and masking tools — its splines and polylines — to direct the warping and morphing.

To set up a warp, you specify "from" geometry in red and "to" geometry in yellow. Masks can be open or closed and need not be connected in any particular way. RE:Flex is the first morphing program to combine hand feature-matching with automatic image registration: its automatic alignment feature uses the tracking found in RE:Vision Effects' Twixtor to align the parts of the image you haven't matched by hand, which can improve morphs without specifying every feature manually.

You can view the warp interactively as you drag the control shapes, match vertices between corresponding geometries, and animate the amount and timing of warping per shape. Rendering uses anti-aliasing subsampling and MipMap filtering, and the product is GPU accelerated, with revamped GPU support in v5 delivering speeds up to 3x faster.

Who is RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex best for?

RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex is best for artists creating morphs and warps in After Effects, DaVinci Resolve or Fusion who want to direct the effect with the host's own splines and roto tools rather than meshes.

How much does RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex cost?

RE:Vision Effects RE:Flex is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Warping is directed through the host program's splines and polylines rather than a grid of mesh points, and shapes need not be closed
  • Interactive warping: view the warp as you drag the control shapes
  • Option to match vertices of corresponding geometries for fine control
  • Automatic image registration combined with hand feature-matching, using the tracking from RE:Vision Effects' Twixtor
  • Amount and timing of warping can be specified and animated per shape, with a variable amount of shape transition between "from" and "to" geometries
  • High-quality render with anti-aliasing subsampling and MipMap filtering; 8 and 16 bits per channel, plus floating point in After Effects (Professional Edition), Shake and Fusion
  • GPU accelerated, with revamped GPU support in v5

Frequently asked questions

Does RE:Flex work with After Effects 2024 and DaVinci Resolve?

RE:Flex supports After Effects CS6 and the CC line through 2022-24, along with DaVinci Resolve Studio v16 and up and Fusion Studio 8.2.1 and later. If you are running AE CC 2015, you'll need version 2015.0.1 (13.5.1) or later. The release listed here is 5.6.1, updated September 2024. For the full, up-to-date compatibility list matching your specific host version, check the developer's page before installing.

Is RE:Flex free?

RE:Flex is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing for morphing and warping plugins can change, and RE:Flex is also included in the RE:Vision Effects Effections bundles, so for current licensing details and how it's sold, check the developer's page. Recent updates have focused on the REVisionActivate licensing component that handles activation, so it's worth confirming the activation requirements there as well.

Can I use RE:Flex still-to-still morphing in Fusion Studio?

RE:Flex offers still-to-still morphing, where you set your frames on the timeline, create a set of geometry on the source image, then move that set to corresponding places on the destination image. This still-to-still workflow is not available in Fusion Studio. RE:Flex can also morph from one moving sequence to another, and it runs across After Effects, DaVinci Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio depending on your host.

Does RE:Flex use GPU acceleration?

RE:Flex is GPU accelerated, and the revamped GPU support introduced in v5 delivers speeds up to 3x faster. Recent maintenance releases have also addressed GPU behaviour: on Mac, GPU processing could fall back to integrated graphics on Intel machines, and on Windows it could fall back to a slower GPU when multiple GPUs were installed, both of which were fixed. RE:Flex also supports 8 and 16 bits per channel, with floating point available in After Effects (Professional Edition), Shake and Fusion.
