Why we like it

Step Motion stands out in the superhive library for packaging a full stop motion workflow — hotkey frame creation, onion skinning and a real-time Geometry Node preview — into a single Blender addon, with a procedural clay shader included.

What is Step Motion?

Step Motion is an addon from YONK that brings a real-life stop motion workflow into Blender. It lets you build frame-by-frame animation by creating, duplicating and adding frames while you edit and sculpt, all through easy hotkeys. Version 1.1 adds in-between frames, prompts you to set a frame's position, and stores previously used materials so they return after Finish Step Motion is pressed.

Onion skinning keeps your active frame visible while older frames fade to red and future frames fade to blue, giving an overview as you work. The Step Motion Preview Geometry Node setup shows your animation in real time, and because it instances your frames you can duplicate them to build scenes by offsetting frame speeds and combining multiple animations without putting too much pressure on your machine.

Each time you open Step Motion your frames are covered in a procedural, animated clay-like shader, and the setup works with Will Anderson Jr.'s free Warpy Step Geometry Node setup for a more claymation look. The package includes three assets: the Step Motion Addon, Step Motion Preview and Step Motion Clay. It runs under a GPL license and supports Blender 3.4 through 4.4.

Who is Step Motion best for?

Step Motion is best for blender artists making stop motion or claymation-style frame-by-frame animation through sculpting and editing.

How much does Step Motion cost?

Step Motion is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Step Motion support?

Step Motion supports Blender 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4, covering a wide range of recent and older releases. It is distributed under a GPL license. The developer provides documentation and a demo video, which you can check to confirm setup details before installing on your specific Blender build. Since the package pairs the addon with Geometry Node setups, staying on a supported version helps keep everything working together.

Is Step Motion free to download?

Step Motion is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing and availability can change over time, so check the developer's page for current terms before downloading. The addon is released under a GPL license and comes as a package of three assets — the Step Motion Addon, Step Motion Preview and Step Motion Clay shader — giving you the full frame-by-frame toolkit rather than a single component.

How does onion skinning work in Step Motion?

Step Motion uses onion skinning to keep your active frame visible while surrounding frames fade out for reference. Older frames fade to red and future frames fade to blue, giving you an overview of your animation as you work. Note that onion skinning does not apply to curves, which you can add through the Add Object function. This color-coded approach helps you track motion across your frame-by-frame sequence while editing and sculpting.

Can Step Motion preview animation in real time?

Step Motion previews your animation in real time through the included Step Motion Preview Geometry Node setup, so you can view the sequence while you sculpt. Because that setup instances your frames, you can duplicate them to build larger scenes by offsetting frame speeds and combining multiple animations without putting too much pressure on your machine. The preview also works alongside Will Anderson Jr.'s free Warpy Step Geometry Node setup for a more claymation-style result.
