Why we like it

Straighten Edge earns a spot in the scriptspot library by handling vertex and edge straightening across both poly and spline objects, with axis-constraint and normalize options in a single MaxScript.

What is Straighten Edge?

Straighten Edge is a MaxScript for 3ds Max that projects and places selected vertices and edges onto a given straight line. It works with Editable Poly objects, the Edit Poly modifier, and Editable Spline and Line objects, covering both polygon and spline editing.

Holding the SHIFT key straightens vertices and edges with axis constraints in the chosen Reference Coordinate System, while holding the ALT key straightens and normalizes them by their distances or lengths. Supported Reference Coordinate Systems include World, Working Pivot, Parent, Screen, and Links.

Version 2.0.0 rewrote and improved the projection-to-line calculations and added support for axis constraints in the Working Pivot, Parent, Screen, and World systems. The normalize calculations were also improved, and the code was cleaned up and refactored. The separate "Straighten Edge (Spline Undo)" script was removed, as it is no longer needed in modern versions of 3ds Max.

Who is Straighten Edge best for?

Straighten Edge is best for 3ds Max modelers who need to align selected vertices or edges to a straight line on Editable Poly, Edit Poly, and spline objects.

How much does Straighten Edge cost?

Straighten Edge is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Straighten Edge work with 3ds Max 2025?

Straighten Edge is listed as compatible with 3ds Max 2025 and later. It runs as a MaxScript and works with Editable Poly objects, the Edit Poly modifier, and Editable Spline and Line objects, projecting selected vertices or edges onto a straight line. If you are on an earlier release, check the developer's page to confirm whether it will run, since the stated compatibility is for 2025 and up.

What objects and modifiers does Straighten Edge support?

Straighten Edge supports four object and modifier types: Editable Poly objects, the Edit Poly modifier, Editable Spline objects, and Line objects. On any of these, it projects and places selected vertices or edges onto a given straight line. That means you can align geometry on both polygon meshes and spline shapes using the same script rather than switching between separate tools.

What do the SHIFT and ALT keys do in Straighten Edge?

Straighten Edge changes its behaviour with modifier keys. Holding SHIFT straightens the selected vertices or edges with axis constraints in the chosen Reference Coordinate System. Holding ALT straightens and normalizes them by their distances or lengths. The supported Reference Coordinate Systems are World, Working Pivot, Parent, Screen, and Links. For details on axis constraints, the 3ds Max help covers the Using the Axis Constraints chapter.

What changed in Straighten Edge 2.0.0?

Straighten Edge 2.0.0 rewrote and improved the projection-to-line calculations and added support for constraints by the axes of Working Pivot, Parent, Screen, and World. The normalize calculations were improved as well. The code was cleaned up and refactored, and the separate "Straighten Edge (Spline Undo)" script was removed because it is no longer needed in modern versions of 3ds Max.

Is Straighten Edge free?

Straighten Edge is listed as free here. For current licensing terms and download details, check the developer's page. It is a MaxScript for 3ds Max that projects and places selected vertices or edges onto a straight line, and it supports Editable Poly objects, the Edit Poly modifier, and Editable Spline and Line objects. The listed compatibility is 3ds Max 2025 and later.
