ToothPaste earns its place in the aescripts library as a focused utility for getting SVGs into After Effects straight from the clipboard, with recent updates adding raster image support and a cleaner layer structure.
ToothPaste is an After Effects extension that quickly pastes SVGs from the clipboard. Copy a vector graphic and paste it straight into your project.
The latest version adds support for raster images, letting ToothPaste handle images embedded inside your SVGs. An improved layer structure keeps pasted SVGs closer to the original structure in your design application, and groups can now be pasted as precomps for extra organisation. Editable text works by default, and strokes in text are supported. Recent fixes resolved shapes being pasted with a black fill by default and compound paths that would not paste correctly.
Gradient handling depends on your After Effects version: in older versions gradients are not imported, and the developer recommends updating After Effects for full gradient support. ToothPaste is compatible with After Effects from 2026 back to CC 2014, and a demo video is available.
ToothPaste is best for after Effects users who bring SVG artwork into compositions by pasting it from the clipboard.
ToothPaste is completely free to download and use.
ToothPaste is compatible with a wide range of After Effects releases, from After Effects 2026 back through 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and the CC versions down to CC 2014. That spread covers both current subscriptions and older installations. If you work across several machines running different After Effects versions, ToothPaste should run on each of them. For the exact list and any version-specific notes, check the developer's page before installing.
ToothPaste can handle raster images embedded inside your SVGs, a capability added in version 1.3.0. Alongside that, the same update introduced an improved layer structure that keeps pasted SVGs closer to the original structure in your design application, and an option to paste groups as precomps for added organisation. So an SVG combining vector shapes and embedded images can be pasted rather than the vector paths alone. See the developer's page for more detail on how these options behave.
ToothPaste's gradient handling depends on your After Effects version. In older versions, pasting SVGs with gradients no longer causes a crash, but gradients will not be imported. For full gradient support, the developer recommends updating After Effects to a more recent release. If gradients matter to your artwork, running a current version of After Effects is the safer choice. The developer's page has more on this behaviour and the changes made in recent updates.
ToothPaste is listed here as free, but licensing terms can change over time. For the current details, including how it is distributed and any account or download steps, check the developer's page on aescripts. That page also carries the latest version, the changelog, and a demo video. Confirming there before you install means you get the up-to-date licensing information straight from the source rather than relying on a cached figure.
