Universal Audio earns its place in the aescripts library for handling audio reference across comps from a single button, with KBar functions built in.
Universal Audio is a script for After Effects from Steve Lewis. With one button it pushes audio through all your comps, so you always have an audio reference along with markers to animate to, no matter where you are in your project. It's aimed at timing animations to voiceover or music.
The script includes KBar support and over 10 new features. Its KBar buttons cover the universalize, refresh, remove, options and view functions, with icons included. The panel's button layout changes based on panel size, and a progress dialog appears while the script runs. You can also include a visual reference, with placement options such as center.
Universal Audio runs across a wide span of After Effects releases, from CS3 through the 2026 version. A demo video is available. It's listed here as free, so check the developer's page for current licensing details.
Universal Audio is best for timing animations to voiceover or music across multiple comps in After Effects.
Universal Audio is completely free to download and use.
Universal Audio supports a broad range of After Effects releases, from the 2026 version back through 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020, plus the CC line (CC 2019 through CC 2014, CC), and older builds including CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4 and CS3. That wide span means it can slot into both current and legacy projects. Version 1.9.4 was released on January 4, 2026. If you need to confirm behaviour on your exact release, the developer's page lists the full compatibility details.
Universal Audio includes KBar support along with icons for KBar buttons. The functions available to those buttons are named universalize, refresh, remove, options and view, so you can trigger the script's actions directly from KBar. If the script is added to KBar without any arguments, the button opens the Universal Audio panel. KBar support and icons were introduced during the 1.9 series of updates, so make sure you're on a recent version to use them.
Universal Audio can include a visual reference alongside the audio, and you can set its placement, including a center option. The script also shows a progress dialog while it works, and its panel button layout adjusts based on the panel size. These behaviours were refined across the 1.9 updates, which included fixes for how the UA layer follows your selected label color and how it positions when the visual reference is enabled with center placement.
Universal Audio is listed here as free, though pricing and licensing can change over time. The 1.9.4 update on January 4, 2026 noted an updated licensing framework, and the earlier 1.9.3 release also updated the licensing framework, so terms have shifted across versions. For the current terms that apply to your use, it's best to check the developer's page on aescripts directly, since that page carries the authoritative licensing information for the script. A demo video is also available if you want to see how it works first.
