Why we like it

Xplod stands out in the superhive library for keeping exploded views fully procedural through Geometry Nodes, so the original mesh is never touched and the result stays animatable.

What is Xplod?

Xplod is a Blender addon for creating exploded views of any mesh object. It uses Geometry Nodes to separate the individual parts of a mesh and move them apart. The result is procedural, non-destructive, and animatable, and your original geometry is never modified.

Six explosion modes cover many uses. Spherical moves each part radially outward from the object center; Inward reverses that for implosion effects; Single Axis constrains movement to one world axis for linear assembly sequences; Axial Radial explodes parts around a chosen axis for cylindrical or rotational assemblies; Random gives each part a unique direction with a blend control and a seed; and Surface Normal moves each part perpendicular to its own surface. Fragmentation control switches between whole disconnected parts and face-level breakup through a single slider, the Influence Zone limits the effect to a spherical falloff region set by an animatable Empty, and Solidify adds thickness to flat or thin meshes before exploding.

Beyond technical exploded views, Xplod also works for motion graphics, and combined with Sound Reaktor it can create sound reactive animations. Version 1.7.2 adds Blender 5.2 compatibility, the Surface Normal mode, and a Spin parameter that adds per-island rotation coupled to Distance.

Who is Xplod best for?

Xplod is best for technical exploded views and assembly animations, plus motion graphics work such as sound reactive animations built with Sound Reaktor.

How much does Xplod cost?

Xplod is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Six explosion modes: Spherical, Inward, Single Axis, Axial Radial, Random, and Surface Normal
  • Fragmentation control with a single slider, from clean part-by-part separation to a shattered, face-level explosion
  • Influence Zone that limits the effect to a spherical falloff region set by a freely positioned, animatable Empty, with radius and falloff controls
  • Solidify option that adds thickness to flat or thin meshes before exploding
  • Spin parameter available in all modes, adding per-island rotation coupled to Distance
  • Built on Geometry Nodes, so the effect is procedural, non-destructive, and animatable without modifying the original geometry

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does Xplod support?

Xplod lists compatibility with Blender 4.2 through 5.2. Version 1.7.2 added support for Blender 5.2, which changed how Geometry Nodes modifier inputs are accessed from Python. The addon now handles both the legacy and new API transparently, so there is no change to how you use it. Xplod is marked as a Blender Extension compatible add-on and works with the Cycles and Eevee render engines. If you are on an earlier release within that range, check the developer's page to confirm the version you need before installing.

Does Xplod change my original mesh?

Xplod builds exploded views using Geometry Nodes, so the effect is procedural, non-destructive, and animatable, and your original geometry is never modified. It separates the individual parts of a mesh and moves them apart without altering the base object. You can choose to explode whole disconnected parts or break the mesh further into individual faces, and a single Fragmentation slider adjusts how aggressively the mesh is fragmented, giving anything from a clean part-by-part separation to a shattered, face-level explosion.

Is Xplod free to use?

Xplod is listed as free in this catalog, so no price figure is shown here. It is released under the GPL license, and its developer, Yatima, is a Blender Dev Fund contributor. For current licensing terms and any distribution details, check the developer's page directly. Licensing can change over time, so the developer's listing is the most reliable place to confirm how Xplod is distributed before you download it or rely on it in a project.

What does the Influence Zone control do in Xplod?

Xplod's Influence Zone lets you limit the explosion to a specific region of space. A spherical falloff area, represented by an Empty you can position freely, defines which parts move and which stay in place. Radius and Falloff controls let you fine-tune the boundary, and because the influence Empty is fully animatable, you can sweep the effect across your mesh over time. Paired with the Spin parameter, which adds per-island rotation coupled to Distance, the animation stays clean with a single keyframe.
