Why we like it

Rated 5 from 24 reviews, Baga Rain Generator earns its place for building rain entirely through geometry nodes and applying its shader as an overlay to existing materials, with distribution methods tuned for both small and large scenes.

What is Baga Rain Generator?

Baga Rain Generator, made by Antoine Bagattini, creates rain in Blender through geometry nodes, and only surfaces exposed to the rain are affected. A procedural rain shader generator lets you add rain to any material, applied as an overlay to your existing material. Two distribution methods are available: one for smaller scenes, based on the total surface area of the project and more accurate, and one for larger scenes, calculated per object and faster.

Splashes use points, which Cycles can render in large quantities. By default, a shader is assigned to droplets and splashes, allowing you to partially simulate motion blur. The generator is designed to produce a large number of points with high performance, though real-time viewability depends on your system, the assigned area and the number of points. Point rendering is not supported by EEVEE, so splashes do not appear there, and the animation settings aim for good-looking rain rather than physical accuracy.

Compatible with Blender 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0, with Cycles as the render engine used. Rated 5 from 24 reviews. A previous version that was not an add-on remains available.

Who is Baga Rain Generator best for?

Baga Rain Generator is best for blender artists who want to add good-looking rain to Cycles scenes and overlay a rain shader onto existing materials.

How much does Baga Rain Generator cost?

Baga Rain Generator is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Baga Rain Generator work with Blender 4.0?

Baga Rain Generator is listed as compatible with Blender 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0, so version 4.0 is covered. The add-on builds rain using geometry nodes, and only surfaces exposed to the rain are affected. On any of these releases, the procedural rain shader generator can be applied as an overlay to existing materials. For versions outside this list, check the developer's page and documentation to confirm current support before installing.

Does Baga Rain Generator work with EEVEE?

Baga Rain Generator relies on point rendering for its splashes, and EEVEE does not support point rendering, so splashes will not appear under EEVEE. The render engine used with the tool is Cycles, which can render the points in large quantities. If your project depends on splashes, plan to render in Cycles rather than EEVEE. Droplets and splashes also carry a default shader that allows you to partially simulate motion blur.

Can Baga Rain Generator render motion blur with rain?

Baga Rain Generator cannot render motion blur with rain. The calculation time for motion blur grows exponentially as the number of particles increases, and the vector pass may not be available. That said, droplets and splashes are assigned a default shader that allows you to partially simulate motion blur, so you can still convey movement without a full motion-blur render. Keep this in mind when planning shots that would otherwise rely on rendered motion blur.

How does Baga Rain Generator distribute rain across a scene?

Baga Rain Generator offers two rain distribution methods. One is intended for smaller scenes and bases distribution on the total surface area of the project, which is more accurate. The other is intended for larger scenes and calculates distribution per object, which is faster. Only surfaces exposed to the rain are affected, and the generator is designed to produce a large number of points with high performance, though real-time viewability depends on your system, the assigned area and the number of points.

Is Baga Rain Generator free to use?

Baga Rain Generator is listed as free in this catalog and carries a GPL license. Licensing terms can change, so check the developer's page for the current details before you rely on it. The tool creates rain using geometry nodes and includes a procedural rain shader generator you can apply over existing materials. A demo video is available, and documentation is provided by the developer to help with setup.
