Why we like it

Released under the GNU GPL v3.0 or later, Camera Plane earns its place in the Blender extensions library for keeping imported image planes locked to a camera's FOV and carrying them through to camera mapping and individual render passes.

What is Camera Plane?

Camera Plane imports images into Blender and parents them to a selected camera. You set each plane's distance and width from the image object's or the camera's properties, and the plane adjusts to the camera's FOV or focal length. Several images can be imported at once and spaced equally in depth, which suits painted stage-like sets that need to stick to a camera.

Imported images appear in a list on the Camera Plane panel, where they can be filtered and displayed alphabetically or by increasing distance from the camera. You can reorder planes by setting their distance, dragging to move several at once, and tweak each image's scale and opacity. Per-layer icons control viewport and render visibility together, selectability, and transform locking.

Operators in the panel's arrow menu manipulate the planes: Group Selected builds a precomposition from selected planes, Space Evenly gives them equal spacing, and Apply Selected ungroups and applies drivers so planes no longer need the add-on. Setup Layers creates view layers and collections for individual render passes, while Convert to Camera Mapping adds a UV Project modifier and Geometry Nodes setup for perspective-correct UVs.

Who is Camera Plane best for?

Camera Plane is best for building painted stage-like sets that stick to a camera in Blender, and setting up planes for camera mapping and per-pass compositing.

How much does Camera Plane cost?

Camera Plane is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Camera Plane work with Blender 5.0?

Camera Plane is compatible with Blender 5.0 and newer. Version 3.0.1 fixes some operators that were being greyed out after Blender 5.0. If you're on an earlier Blender release, check the developer's GitLab page for versions that match your setup, since this entry targets Blender 5.0 and up. The add-on requests permission to import images from disk, so it needs file access to load the images you parent to the camera.

How do I install Camera Plane in Blender?

Camera Plane can be added by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading the add-on and installing it from disk. Once installed, select your camera, then click Import Camera Planes from the object properties and choose the images you want to import. The panel then extends to show your list of images, which you can filter and order either alphabetically or by increasing distance from the camera.

What license is Camera Plane released under?

Camera Plane is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. It's listed here as free; for current licensing terms and the source code, see the developer's GitLab page from Les Fées Spéciales. The extension also requests a Files permission so it can import images from disk, which is the access it needs to load images onto planes parented to your camera.

What does Convert to Camera Mapping do in Camera Plane?

Camera Plane includes a Convert to Camera Mapping operator, available from the viewport's context menu, that sets up selected objects for camera mapping. It adds a UV Project modifier and a Geometry Nodes setup that fixes UVs so they are perspective correct. If no camera is selected, a new one is created, so select the camera you want to use for projection first. This lets the planes be edited for camera mapping rather than staying as plain image planes.
