Why we like it

Ranked 7 on aescripts, Bodymovin - Lottie earns its place for exporting After Effects work into the Lottie format for web and mobile playback.

What is Bodymovin - Lottie?

Bodymovin - Lottie is an extension for After Effects that exports animations as Lottie files. By default it produces .json files that run on the lottie.js player bundled with it, letting animations render in the browser on SVG, canvas and HTML. The same exports can also play natively on iOS and Android using Lottie. It supports a subset of After Effects features.

On the shape side it handles paths, ellipses, stars and rectangles, along with fills, strokes, and gradient fills and gradient strokes. Trim paths and cameras are partially supported, and it covers rounded corners, transforms including skew, time remap, drop shadow and pro levels. Most fonts export as shapes or as text, and masks include additive plus difference, inverted and subtractive in some cases, with luma and alpha masks under the SVG renderer.

Version 5.12.1 (June 2023) added esm support and a Transform Effect fix, while recent releases brought Essential Graphics and slots support and significant canvas renderer performance gains. It is compatible with After Effects from CC 2014 through 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bodymovin - Lottie work with After Effects 2025?

Bodymovin - Lottie lists compatibility with After Effects 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020, as well as CC 2019, CC 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015 and CC 2014. That range covers current Creative Cloud releases back through several older versions, so most active After Effects installations are supported. If you are running a version outside this list, check the developer's page for the latest compatibility details before installing.

Can animations from Bodymovin - Lottie play on iOS and Android?

Bodymovin - Lottie exports animations that can play natively on iOS and Android using Lottie, alongside browser playback. In the browser, the exported .json files run on the lottie.js player that comes with the extension, and can render on SVG, canvas or HTML. Keep in mind the extension supports a subset of After Effects features, so not every effect in a composition will carry across to the exported animation.

Does Bodymovin - Lottie support expressions?

Bodymovin - Lottie supports expressions partially, and more expressions are added with each release. Expression sliders are supported, and the developer invites users to report any expression that gives them trouble. Beyond expressions, the extension handles transforms such as rotation, scale, position, anchor point and opacity, along with time remap. Because coverage is a subset of After Effects, it is worth testing an exported animation to confirm your specific expressions come through as expected.

Is Bodymovin - Lottie free?

Bodymovin - Lottie is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so check the developer's page on aescripts for the current terms before you download. Beyond that, the extension bundles the lottie.js player used for browser playback and exports animations as .json files, with the same output also playable natively on iOS and Android through Lottie. Because it supports a subset of After Effects features, it is worth confirming your composition exports as expected before relying on it.
