Un-PreCompose earns its spot as one of the more popular scripts on aescripts, offering a focused way to extract layers from a nested composition back into the parent while keeping their effects and properties. Native Apple Silicon support and compatibility from CC 2018 through After Effects 2026 keep it usable across old and new projects.
Un-PreCompose is a script for After Effects that reverses precomposition. It extracts all of the layers out of a nested composition and places them into the parent composition, maintaining all the effects and other properties on those layers.
Beyond single compositions, it can un-precompose multiple pre-comps in a single run so you can work more efficiently. It can optionally attempt to correct the placement of layers that contain randomized expressions, and it can prepend extracted layers with the name of the pre-comp for easier organization.
The script includes native Apple Silicon support and works across a wide range of After Effects releases, from CC 2018 through 2026. It is listed here as free, and a demo video is available on the developer's page.
Un-PreCompose is best for after Effects artists who need to flatten nested compositions back into the parent comp while preserving each layer's effects and properties.
Un-PreCompose is completely free to download and use.
Un-PreCompose is compatible with a broad range of After Effects releases: 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, and CC 2018. The most recent update, version 1.1.5 from June 2023, fixed a crash on Windows. Earlier updates addressed errors and crashes tied to specific releases and to prepending pre-comp names. Because the coverage spans nearly a decade of releases, the script should slot into most current and legacy projects you're working in.
Un-PreCompose includes native Apple Silicon support, which arrived in the version 1.1.0 release, so it runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs rather than through translation. That same release also introduced the ability to un-precompose multiple pre-comps in a single run and the option to prepend extracted layers with the pre-comp name. Apple Silicon users get the script's full layer-extraction workflow, pulling layers out of a nested composition and into the parent while keeping effects and other properties intact.
Un-PreCompose can un-precompose multiple pre-comps in a single run, so you don't have to process each nested composition separately. It's designed to help you work more efficiently. For each pre-comp it extracts, the script maintains the effects and other properties on the layers, can optionally attempt to correct the placement of layers containing randomized expressions, and can prepend the extracted layers with the pre-comp name for easier organization when you flatten several compositions at once.
Un-PreCompose is listed here as free. For current licensing terms and any download or account requirements, check the developer's page at aescripts. Pricing and distribution details on marketplace scripts can change over time, so the developer's listing is the most reliable place to confirm how the script is offered before you install it. The catalog reflects its free status at listing time, but it's worth verifying the latest terms on the developer's page.
