circuitFX earns its place in the aescripts library for turning out randomized circuit-board graphics on demand, with a static-seed option added in its 1.90 update for repeatable results.
circuitFX is an After Effects tool for creating graphical circuit boards. The circuit pattern is generated randomly with each button press, and beyond the circuit lines and circles it also produces chips, resistors, and capacitors. You can place all the parts in a single shape layer or split each part of the board into its own separate shape layer.
A "Using Masks" mode lets you shape circuits within drawn areas. You set the Grid X and Grid Y values to control the density of the grid, create a grid guide, draw one or more masks on that layer, and then generate the circuit from those masks. The tool is aimed at technology or sci-fi projects, animated backgrounds, HUDs, and similar work.
Version 1.91 arrived in October 2024. Recent updates made circuit generation much faster and more intuitive, added a static seed so you can repeat the exact same circuit when other values stay unchanged, and fixed an issue that had prevented generation in the "Using Masks" mode. circuitFX runs across a wide range of After Effects versions, covering CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2017, CC 2018, CC 2019, and the yearly releases from 2020 through 2025. The 1.90 update removed support for CS6, so the current version targets CC and later. If you're on an older build, check the developer's page to confirm your specific release works before installing. This coverage means most modern After Effects setups can run the tool without version concerns.
circuitFX generates a fresh, random circuit pattern with every button press, but you don't have to leave results to chance. A seed value field and random seed checkbox let you set a static seed and produce the exact same circuit again, as long as all other values remain the same. This capability was added in the 1.90 update alongside faster circuit pre-calculation. If you need a repeatable result rather than a new pattern each time, the static seed gives you that control.
circuitFX includes a "Using Masks" mode for shaping circuits inside drawn areas. You set the Grid X and Grid Y values to control the grid density, select the "Using Masks" mode, then click "Create Grid Guide" to build the grid. On the grid guide layer you draw one or more masks (masks, not shapes), and with that layer selected in the timeline you press "Create circuit by using masks" to generate the result. The 1.91 update fixed an issue that had prevented circuit generation in this mode.
circuitFX is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so for the current terms and to download the plugin, head to the developer's page. The 1.90 update also refreshed the license framework and addressed a license deactivation error, so make sure you're running a recent version if you run into activation issues.
