CropROI earns its place in the aescripts library for a narrow, practical job: cropping a precomp to its Region of Interest in a few clicks while keeping the layer's position intact. The 1.2 update addressed position and child-layer bugs carried over from earlier versions.
CropROI is a script for Adobe After Effects that crops a precomposition to its Region of Interest. The crop happens without shifting the layer's position, so the precomp stays put in your main composition.
The workflow is short. You open your pre-composition, add a Region of Interest, then switch back to your main composition. From there you select the precomp layer, click the CropROI button, and the precomp is cropped to that region.
CropROI runs on After Effects CS6 and later, covering CC through the 2025 release. Version 1.2, from September 2023, fixed bugs where the precomp would move to another location and where the children of the precomp layer would move after the crop. A demo video is available. CropROI supports Adobe After Effects CS6 and later, including CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.3, CC 2017, CC 2018, CC 2019, and the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 releases. That range covers most modern After Effects installations as well as older CS6-era projects. CropROI version 1.2, released on September 30, 2023, fixed a bug where the precomp would move to another location and a bug where the children of the precomp layer would move after the crop. Earlier, version 1.1 addressed an error that occurred when the 'Default Position Properties to Separated Dimensions' setting was enabled, and version 1.0 was the initial release. If you are on an older build, updating to 1.2 brings these fixes for position and child-layer behaviour after cropping.
