Why we like it

Effect Matte earns its place in the aescripts library as a matte tool that keeps track-matte setups on a single layer, with expansion, roundness, and feathering controls and support reaching from CS6 through After Effects 2026.

What is Effect Matte?

Effect Matte, from Plugin Everything, applies a matte directly to a layer in After Effects. It adds a sized, customizable matte that removes the need for a separate layer set up as a track matte. When applied to a layer, the matte auto-sets, and an invert matte option is included.

Shaping the matte is handled through a few controls: expansion in both positive and negative directions, roundness, and feathering. A couple of conditions apply. Effect Matte requires layers to have continuous rasterization enabled, its Auto Set Matte feature is not compatible with shape layers, and it works with parented layers only on CC 2018.

The plugin runs across a broad span of After Effects versions, from CS6 through 2026. Version 1.4.0 (March 2025) addressed multi-frame rendering stability, and earlier updates brought native Apple Silicon support and multi-frame rendering. A demo video is available.

Who is Effect Matte best for?

Effect Matte is best for after Effects users who want a matte applied straight to a layer without setting up an extra track matte layer.

Frequently asked questions

What After Effects versions does Effect Matte support?

Effect Matte lists compatibility with a wide range of After Effects releases, from CS6 up through 2026, including CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.3, CC 2017, CC 2018, CC 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. One note on parenting: Effect Matte works with layers that have parents only on CC 2018. For the current version and any version-specific behaviour, check the developer's page.

Does Effect Matte require continuous rasterization?

Effect Matte requires layers to have continuous rasterization enabled in order to work. If continuous rasterization isn't turned on for a layer, enable it before relying on the matte, since this is a stated requirement for the plugin. It's a useful thing to check first whenever the matte doesn't appear or behave the way you expect on a given layer. For setup guidance, refer to the developer's page.

Does Effect Matte work with shape layers?

Effect Matte's Auto Set Matte feature is not compatible with shape layers. That means the automatic matte sizing you get when applying the effect to a layer won't kick in on shape layers, so you'd set things up manually in that case. The plugin's other controls, including expansion, roundness, and feathering, sit apart from this particular limitation. For more detail, check the developer's page.

Does Effect Matte support Apple Silicon Macs?

Effect Matte added native support for ARM chips, meaning Apple Silicon, in version 1.3.7 (February 2022). More recently, version 1.4.0 fixed multi-frame rendering (MFR) stability, and MFR support itself arrived in version 1.3.5 alongside compatibility with AE 2021. If you're running a recent Mac or using multi-frame rendering, these updates are relevant. Check the developer's page for the full changelog.

Is Effect Matte free?

Effect Matte is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so for the current terms and any activation details, check the developer's page on aescripts. The changelog references online activation and repeated updates to the licensing framework, so activation may factor into setup depending on the version you download. Confirm the latest requirements directly at the source.
