Why we like it

Grid Builder earns its spot in the aescripts library by consolidating grid creation, morphing, and proximity effects under a single Null.

What is Grid Builder?

Grid Builder is a grid engine for After Effects built around a single Null that handles creating, managing, and animating complex layouts. It offers four grid modes—rectangular, radial, path, and spherical—so a range of arrangements can be built and driven from one control point.

Beyond static layouts, Grid Builder triggers proximity effects. You can set up custom proximity, add multiple effectors, and run multiple proximity groups, and grids can be swapped while proximity is in use. A Morph mode moves grid layouts back and forth between one another, and each asset in a grid gets its own Twist and Stagger controls. Controls carry over between grid modes, keyframes included.

The plugin works with After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022, and the current version is 2.0.1 from June 2026. It sits at rank 29 in the aescripts library, and a demo video is available.

Frequently asked questions

What After Effects versions does Grid Builder support?

Grid Builder is compatible with After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022. The current release is version 2.0.1, updated on June 27, 2026. That range spans several recent release cycles, so most current After Effects installations fall within it. For definitive system requirements and any details tied to your operating system or configuration, check the developer's page before installing, since supported versions can shift between releases.

Is Grid Builder free to use?

Grid Builder is listed as free in this catalog. The changelog also references changes and enhancements within the Trial version, so a trial exists alongside the main release. Licensing terms can change over time, so for current pricing, license conditions, and trial details, refer to the developer's page and confirm the exact terms there before you rely on any particular arrangement.

What grid types can Grid Builder create?

Grid Builder creates layouts in four grid modes: rectangular, radial, path, and spherical. All of them are managed from a single Null, and grids can be changed while proximity effects are active. Each asset within a grid also gets Twist and Stagger controls, and Morph mode moves between grid layouts back and forth. Controls carry over between grid modes, keyframes included, and a demo video is available.

Does Grid Builder let you morph between grid layouts?

Grid Builder includes a Morph mode that morphs between grid layouts back and forth. As of version 2.0.1, Morph is available directly in the create grid process. Alongside morphing, controls carry over between grid modes, keyframes included, and each asset in a grid gets Twist and Stagger controls. These sit within the same single-Null workflow used for the rest of the tool's grid and proximity features.
