Why we like it

RXXR stands out in the aescripts library for bundling ASCII and pixel-based glitch styling into a single generator, with recent updates adding style mixing, new gradient presets, and an Edge Detect mode.

What is RXXR?

RXXR is a generator plugin from R/L for producing ASCII and pixel-based techno-glitch effects inside After Effects. It builds these stylized character- and pixel-driven looks through a set of adjustable controls within a composition.

The plugin ships with a range of character styles, and its Mix Style feature lets you blend built-in styles into new visual combinations. An Edge Detect mode visualizes elements only along the edges of objects in the frame, with a Dark Outlines option for that mode. Gradient presets and a Gradient Shift controller handle colour, while Grid parameters such as Line Size and Expand Markers control cell appearance. Custom Elements includes a preview function for the selected step, and reworked Offset parameters add a Wrap Edges option.

RXXR is currently at version 1.1.0 and supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020. It's listed here as free, so check R/L's page for current licensing. RXXR sits within the aescripts library.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does RXXR support?

RXXR supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020. That range covers several years of releases, spanning versions from 2020 onward, so it can drop into both current and older project setups. Version 1.1.0 was last updated on June 21, 2026. If you're on a version outside that list, check R/L's page before installing to confirm compatibility.

Is RXXR free to download?

RXXR is listed here as free. It's an After Effects generator plugin from R/L for ASCII and pixel-based techno-glitch effects. Pricing and licensing terms can change, so check R/L's page on aescripts for the current details before you download. Listing it as free here reflects how it's catalogued in this library rather than a guarantee of the terms at the developer's end.

What did the RXXR 1.1.0 update add?

RXXR 1.1.0 introduced Mix Style for combining built-in character styles, added four new character styles, and added two new gradient presets alongside a new Gradient Shift controller. It also added a Dark Outlines mode for Edge Detect, reworked the Offset parameters with a new Wrap Edges parameter, improved Target Color performance, fixed issues with Flicker and Echo while adding new Echo modes, and increased the maximum values for Symbol Size.

How does the Edge Detect mode in RXXR work?

RXXR's Edge Detect mode visualizes elements only along the edges of objects in the frame, rather than across the full image. It was introduced in the 1.0.5 release, and version 1.1.0 later added a Dark Outlines mode for it. The Grid's Expand Markers parameter, which is enabled by default in Edges mode, lets markers extend beyond cell boundaries when working with this mode.
