Layer Repeater earns its place in the aescripts library for turning a single layer into a controllable set of offset copies driven from one null.
Layer Repeater is a script by Adam Katz for After Effects that animates offsets in space and time for multiple layers. Select the layer you want to duplicate, choose how many copies to make, and decide whether the duplicated layers carry 3D properties.
Run from the Windows menu, the script replaces the selected layer with a composition and adds a null holding controls that affect the duplicated layers. Additional controls let you offset the copies in time, and a checkbox reverses the order of layer stacking.
Layer Repeater supports a broad span of After Effects releases, from CS3 through 2026. Older versions back to CS6 still work, though the time remapping features added in version 2.6 are not available there. It is listed as free in this catalog.

Layer Repeater is compatible with a wide range of After Effects versions, listed from CS3 through 2026. Layer Repeater includes a .manifest file, added in version 2.6.5, that helps installation through the aescripts + aeplugins manager app. Once installed, you run the script from the Windows menu in After Effects, then select the layer you want to duplicate. As of version 2.4, you no longer need administrator rights to install it, which simplifies setup on locked-down machines. The plugin ships as a .jsxbin script file along with a folder called layer_repeater_effects, both of which need to be in place for it to run.

Layer Repeater added controls for offsetting layers in time in version 2.6, released June 12, 2020, alongside its spatial offsets. The added null carries controls that affect the duplicated layers, including these time-based options. Keep in mind the time remapping features are tied to newer After Effects releases; versions older than CC 2019 retain only partial compatibility and lack them. A later fix in version 2.6.4 addressed a small bug in the time remapping expression that could sometimes cause it to error, so updating helps if you use these controls.
