Why we like it

Lens Sim earns its place in the superhive library for bringing patent-data lens simulation directly into Blender's native camera and Cycles rendering engine.

What is Lens Sim?

Lens Sim simulates the physical characteristics of glass and the aperture opening in Blender, producing common lens effects such as chromatic aberration, vignetting, distortion, lens softness, focus breathing and natural bokeh shapes. Built on actual lens patent data, the selection spans wide-angle to telephoto, each lens carrying a unique bokeh shape and distortion profile, alongside specialized macro, tilt-shift and soft lenses.

The addon integrates with Blender's native camera and the Cycles rendering engine, with multi-camera support. A single click extends a Blender camera into a Lens Sim camera. By tracing a single ray from the focus object to the lens, it determines the ideal sensor position for that distance, removing the need for manual lens focusing.

You can create your own lenses, adjust their specifications, save designs and share them, with each lens implemented through a built-in data table. The newest version renders only with NVIDIA OptiX GPUs or CPU in Cycles and uses the OSL camera shaders introduced in Blender 4.5, so the newest Blender version is required.

Who is Lens Sim best for?

Lens Sim is best for blender artists rendering in Cycles who want physically based lens effects like bokeh, distortion, chromatic aberration and focus breathing for a more film-like, organic look.

How much does Lens Sim cost?

Lens Sim is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Simulates the physical characteristics of glass and the aperture opening to produce chromatic aberration, vignetting, distortion, lens softness, focus breathing and natural bokeh shapes
  • Extensive selection of lenses modeled from real-world patent data, from wide-angle to telephoto, each with a unique bokeh shape and distortion profile
  • Single-click conversion of a standard Blender camera into a Lens Sim camera, with multi-camera support and Cycles integration
  • Automatic sensor positioning by tracing a ray from the focus object to the lens, removing manual lens focusing
  • Custom lens design with adjustable specifications, plus saving and sharing, implemented through a built-in data table
  • Editing tools including a custom chromatic aberration ramp, tilt-shift, extra distortion, custom aperture image, anamorphic emulation, bokeh swirliness and extended field of view
  • Runs native within Blender during rendering, so it works on any render farm that supports the OSL camera shaders introduced in Blender 4.5

Frequently asked questions

Does Lens Sim work with the standard Blender camera?

Lens Sim integrates with Blender's native camera and the Cycles rendering engine, with multi-camera support so you can keep your standard workflow while designing shots. A single click extends a standard Blender camera into a Lens Sim camera, and creating and converting cameras is straightforward. It also traces a single ray from the focus object to the lens to determine the ideal sensor position for that distance, which removes the need for manual lens focusing.

Can Lens Sim run on a render farm?

Lens Sim works native within Blender without relying on the addon itself during rendering, so once your scene is set up its features are integrated into Blender's system. This lets it run on any render farm that supports Blender. The one requirement is that the render farm must support the OSL camera shaders introduced in Blender 4.5. For confirmation of a farm's support, see the developer's documentation.

Can you create custom lenses in Lens Sim?

Lens Sim lets you create your own lenses, adjust their specifications to suit your needs, save your designs for future use, and share them with others. Each lens is implemented through a built-in data table. Beyond building lenses, its editing tools let you tailor them per scene with a custom chromatic aberration ramp, tilt-shift, extra lens distortion, a custom aperture image, anamorphic emulation, added bokeh swirliness and an extended field of view.

Is Lens Sim free?

Lens Sim is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing terms and any conditions, check the developer's page, where you can also find the documentation. Before downloading, note the technical requirements: the newest version renders only with NVIDIA OptiX GPUs or CPU in Cycles, and it uses the OSL camera shaders introduced in Blender 4.5, so you will need the newest Blender version.
