Why we like it

Moiré earns its place in the aescripts library by turning moiré-pattern creation into a one-click, slider-driven task, with automatic tracking-based parenting and animation built on native After Effects effects.

What is Moiré?

Moiré generates moiré patterns in After Effects with a single click, letting you push the result modern or retro. It's built as a companion for adding realism to CRT or VHS looks, and the pattern's appearance is adjusted through simple sliders.

The plugin can automatically parent and/or corner pin the pattern to tracked footage, and animate the moiré pattern to that footage with a click. It's built on native After Effects effects, and includes a kBar toolbar along with kBar icons. Version 1.5 added 32-bit support.

Moiré is compatible with After Effects 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020. Version 1.8 was released on February 24, 2025. A demo video is available on the developer's page, and the plugin is listed here as free.

Who is Moiré best for?

Moiré is best for adding moiré patterns to footage with one click, and complementing CRT or VHS looks in After Effects.

Frequently asked questions

Does Moiré work with After Effects 2025?

Moiré lists compatibility with After Effects 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, so it covers several recent versions of the application. The current release is version 1.8, published on February 24, 2025, which fixed a language-localization issue with drop-down menus. Earlier updates addressed errors reported on older versions of After Effects, including fixes tied to specific script lines. If you run one of the listed versions, the plugin is intended to work with it.

Is Moiré free to use?

Moiré is listed here as free. For current licensing details, check the developer's page, which also hosts a demo video. The plugin is built on native After Effects effects and ships with a kBar toolbar plus kBar icons. Licensing terms can change over time, so confirm what applies on the developer's page before downloading. The current version is 1.8, released on February 24, 2025, and it supports After Effects versions from 2020 through 2025.

Does Moiré support 32-bit color?

Moiré added 32-bit support in version 1.5, released on May 27, 2024. That same update also added new features to its matte and track-to-layer functionality, added a re-link expression button to allow pre-comping, and fixed alignment issues at uncommon or mismatching resolutions. Since then, later versions have continued with fixes, and the current release is 1.8. If working in a 32-bit project is part of your setup, the support is present in version 1.5 and onward.

How does Moiré align the pattern to tracked footage?

Moiré can automatically parent and/or corner pin the pattern to your tracked footage, and it can animate the moiré pattern to that footage with the click of a button. Version 1.6 fixed flicker and evolution not working without a tracked layer, and also fixed a repair expression that wasn't working without a tracked layer. Version 1.5 added new features to the matte and track-to-layer functionality and a re-link expression button to allow pre-comping. The plugin is built on native After Effects effects.
