Poly Stitch tools earns its place for a focused job: closing the gap between open borders with fresh faces, either within a single object through QuickStitch or across separate objects through StitchPoly. A recent algorithm update makes the final triangulation cleaner and cuts down on errors.
Poly Stitch tools work on editable polygon objects, building new faces between selected open edges, or borders, mainly to connect roads and terrain. The road and terrain must be single-side polygon objects, and the faces they create appear as red faces.
The set includes two ways to stitch. StitchPoly handles stitching between different objects, or borders in the same object that can't be selected in one pass. It uses a Source Border and a Dest Border to set where stitching begins and ends, a Dest->Source option that makes the new faces part of the source border's object, a Relax option that opens a relax dialog for the new faces, and a MatID control. By default the new faces take the source border's Material ID, and enabling the checkbox activates a spinner to set a different one. QuickStitch covers stitching on the same object when borders are easy to select.
A recent update improved the stitch algorithm, reducing error probability and giving better final triangulation, and removing the need to clear jags of borders beforehand. Poly Stitch tools is one feature of TerrainAxe. A tutorial on building roads over complex terrain and a demo video are available.
Poly Stitch tools is best for 3ds Max artists connecting roads to terrain by stitching new faces between open borders on editable polygon objects.
Poly Stitch tools is completely free to download and use.
Poly Stitch tools works on editable polygon objects in 3ds Max, creating new faces between selected open edges, or borders. For it to work as intended, the road and terrain must be single-side polygon objects. The tools are aimed at connecting roads and terrain, and the faces they generate appear as red faces so you can spot them after stitching. If you want to refine the result, the Relax option opens a relax dialog for adjusting the newly created faces.
Poly Stitch tools offers two ways to stitch. StitchPoly is meant for stitching between different objects, or for borders within the same object that can't be selected in one pass; it uses a Source Border and a Dest Border to define where stitching starts and ends, plus a Dest->Source option that makes the new faces part of the source border's object. QuickStitch handles the simpler case, stitching on the same object when the borders can be selected easily, so you can complete the join quickly.
Poly Stitch tools lets you control the Material ID of the faces it creates. By default, new faces take the same Material ID as the faces the source border belongs to. If you'd rather assign a different one, enabling the MatID checkbox activates a spinner where you can set the Material ID for the new faces. Alongside this, the Relax option opens a relax dialog after stitching, letting you relax the faces the tool just generated.
Poly Stitch tools is listed as free in this catalog, and it comes as one feature of the larger TerrainAxe package for 3ds Max. Licensing terms can change, so check the developer's page at flyingcfx.com for the current details before relying on it in production. There you'll also find a tutorial on building roads over complex terrain, along with a downloadable Max file and a demo video that accompany the walkthrough.
