Why we like it

Aura earns its place for rendering hundreds of thousands of high-frequency waves on the GPU, with a render quality setting to balance quality against performance. Its mix of Band, Surface, and Dots render modes, 3D camera awareness, and SVG export makes it a flexible option for procedural geometric animation in After Effects. A demo video is available.

What is Rowbyte Aura?

Rowbyte Aura is a procedural plug-in for After Effects that creates geometric shapes in 3D space. It works like a particle system, but instead of scattering small particles it generates vector-like shapes, or waves, that change over time, in the manner of the classic Radiowaves plug-in. Aura can render hundreds of thousands of high-frequency waves and produce animations from them.

Rendering runs on the GPU, and a render quality setting controls the tradeoff between quality and performance. Aura is 3D camera-aware within After Effects and can create Depth of Field Bokeh with custom Aperture settings. Turbulent Noise can be applied to waves so they evolve over time, and wave controls carry start and end parameters plus graph parameters that shape how they change. Waves can follow Motion Paths, and multiple Wave Producers can be driven from 3D layers.

Shapes come from a built-in polygon generator or from AE masks, including text layers converted to masks. Band, Surface, and Dots render modes offer different ways to visualize waves, and AE layers can act as Color Maps to drive wave colors. Aura includes Multi-Frame Rendering and SVG export, and was built for After Effects' multi-threaded architecture with support for persistent caching.

Who is Rowbyte Aura best for?

Rowbyte Aura is best for after Effects artists building geometric wave animations and procedural motion graphics in 3D space.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does Rowbyte Aura support?

Rowbyte Aura is compatible with After Effects 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, CC 2018, and CC 2017, covering a broad range of Creative Cloud releases. It was designed to take advantage of After Effects' multi-threaded architecture introduced in recent Creative Cloud versions, which brings better support for persistent caching and rendering performance. For the current list of supported releases and installer downloads, check the developer's page.

Does Rowbyte Aura support Multi-Frame Rendering?

Rowbyte Aura supports Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR), which was added in version 1.2.3. Because Aura was built from the ground up for After Effects' multi-threaded architecture, MFR fits with its approach to persistent caching and rendering performance. Later versions refined this further, with MFR rendering fixes in 1.2.4. If you rely on MFR in your pipeline, the developer's page lists the version history and any related requirements.

Can Rowbyte Aura export SVG?

Rowbyte Aura can export SVG sequences, a feature introduced in version 1.2.0. This works alongside its render modes and lets you output the generated vector-like waves from After Effects as SVG. Because Aura produces vector-like shapes rather than scattered particles, the waves can be exported in this vector format. For details on how SVG export behaves in the current build, refer to the developer's documentation.

Does Rowbyte Aura run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Rowbyte Aura added support for Apple Silicon and M1 chips in version 1.2.5, released in December 2021, which also fixed rendering issues on Intel GPUs. Since Aura relies on GPU-accelerated rendering for its high-frequency waves, GPU behavior matters to how it performs. For the latest notes on Mac hardware support and any macOS requirements, the developer's page is the place to check.

Is Rowbyte Aura free to use?

Rowbyte Aura is listed as free here. Licensing terms can change over time, and Aura has a history of floating license support, including a Floating License Server compatibility update in its changelog and further compatibility fixes in later versions. For current licensing details, any pricing, and download options, check the developer's page directly, since that reflects the most up-to-date terms.
