Why we like it

Slice it Up 2 stands out in the aescripts library for keeping slicing procedural and non-destructive, with randomisation controls that stay editable at any point. Its compatibility reaches from CS4 up to After Effects 2026.

What is Slice it Up 2?

Slice it Up 2 brings a procedural, non-destructive approach to slicing in After Effects. Built by Rendertom, it lets you generate an unlimited number of slices and work in either 2D or 3D space.

The controls centre on randomisation. You can randomise slice width or height at any time, randomise how slices are distributed, and randomise the slice axis direction. Distribution can run random or linear in space, and you can regenerate a previous seed to return to a look you liked. A separate control lets you shrink or expand the slice mask.

The plugin runs across a wide range of After Effects versions, from CS4 through the 2026 release, and version 2.1.2 was published on February 14, 2026. A demo video is available on the developer's page.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does Slice it Up 2 support?

Slice it Up 2 lists compatibility across a broad span of After Effects releases, from CC 2015 and older CS versions through CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and CS6, up to the modern 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 releases. That range covers both long-standing installations and current versions, so it fits into older projects as well as recent ones. For the definitive list and any per-version notes, check the developer's page.

Is Slice it Up 2 free to download?

Slice it Up 2 is listed here as free, so you can add it to your After Effects setup without a purchase. Licensing can change over time, and the changelog shows updates to the licensing framework in the 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 releases, so the current terms are best confirmed on the developer's page before you download. That page will also carry the most up-to-date version and any licensing details tied to it.

Can Slice it Up 2 slice layers in 3D?

Slice it Up 2 works in both 2D and 3D space, so slices are not limited to flat layers. You can toggle between 2D and 3D at any time, which means a setup can move between the two without rebuilding it. Combined with the unlimited slice count and the randomisation of width, height, distribution and axis direction, that gives room to build slicing effects that sit in a 3D scene as readily as a 2D composition.

What changed in Slice it Up 2 version 2.1.2?

Slice it Up 2 version 2.1.2 was published on February 14, 2026, and its change was to the licensing framework. The preceding 2.1.1 release, from January 4, 2025, also updated the licensing framework, while version 2.1 back in November 2019 added support for macOS Catalina. Earlier still, version 2.0 rewrote the code, optimised expressions and expanded the interface and effect controls.
