So-Sprite earns its place in the Superhive library for turning the multi-step setup of 2D sprites in Blender into a single, interface-driven process.
So-Sprite is a Blender add-on designed to simplify the creation and management of animated 2D sprites inside 3D environments. Integrating a sequence of images or an animated element into a 3D scene normally means creating a plane at the correct dimensions, setting up material nodes, configuring camera tracking and managing animation timing. So-Sprite automates these technical steps so artists can concentrate on the creative work.
The add-on lets you create a plane with imported media (video, image sequence or single image), choose a tracking mode (2D, 3D, Flat or None), adjust material settings such as emission, transparency and roughness, and tweak animation settings including loop and frame start. It runs with the Cycles and Eevee render engines.
The initial aim is to build simple visual effects without complex physical simulations, such as smoke rising from a chimney, crackling campfire flames or cartoonish explosions. Beyond that, it is described as a versatile tool for motion design, architectural visualization and rapid prototyping of animation or visual-effect ideas.
So-Sprite is best for blender artists integrating animated 2D sprites into 3D scenes for motion design, architectural visualization and rapid prototyping.
So-Sprite is completely free to download and use.
So-Sprite is compatible with Blender versions 4.0 through 4.5 and is listed as Blender Extension compatible, packaged as an add-on. It works with both the Cycles and Eevee render engines, so you can use it across those workflows. If you are on an older or newer Blender release outside that range, check the developer's page to confirm current compatibility before installing.
So-Sprite works with the Cycles and Eevee render engines in Blender. Its material settings let you adjust emission, transparency and roughness, and the sprites use an alpha management parameter offering a choice between Value and Lightness. Fade-in and fade-out are also supported. Because both render engines are covered, you can build sprite-based effects in either without changing your approach to the add-on.
So-Sprite is listed as free here in the catalog. It is distributed under an MIT license and is offered for personal and commercial use, with a separate multi-user option described for small teams. For current licensing terms and any details on the single-user and multi-user options, visit the developer's page, where So-Sprite and its license information are published directly by the creator.
So-Sprite lets you define a tracking mode for each sprite, choosing between 2D, 3D, Flat or None. A recent update added custom Y rotation with a gizmo, using Geometry Nodes in place of constraints, and sprites will automatically follow the active camera. Together these controls handle how a 2D sprite orients within your 3D scene without manual camera-tracking setup for each element.
