Split Blur stands out in the aescripts library for a kaleidoscopic blur driven by per-pixel luminosity, where the curve and twirl controls shape how the splits spread. Version 1.5.0's Twirl Angle adds adaptive rotation to the mix.
Split Blur is a kaleidoscopic blur effect by Satori for After Effects and Premiere Pro. It splits an image into copies spaced evenly on a circle around the original, producing a result with an organic painterly feel.
The effect can be applied using overall luminance (Luma), each RGB component separately, or a single Red, Green, Blue, or Alpha channel. Split Count sets how many copies the image is divided into, while Splits Rotation changes their angle. A set of curve controls maps pixel luminosity to blur distance, and edge behaviour can be set to Wrap, Mirror, Repeat Last, or Transparent. You can also use the depth map of a 3D render or footage as an intensity source.
Version 1.5.0 added the Twirl Angle feature, which applies adaptive rotation according to luminosity and its corresponding Twirl Curve settings, along with a Twirl Intensity Source for driving the twirl from a different layer. Split Blur supports After Effects and Premiere Pro releases from CS6 through the 2026 versions.
Split Blur is best for creating kaleidoscopic, painterly blur effects in After Effects and Premiere Pro, including driving the effect from the depth map of a 3D render or footage.
Split Blur is completely free to download and use.
Split Blur runs in After Effects releases from CS6 through the 2026 version, covering CC and CS6, the CC 2014 to CC 2019 range, and 2020 through 2026. It also supports Premiere Pro across the same span, from CS6 up to the 2026 release. If you are on a build outside those listed, check Satori's page on aescripts for the current compatibility list before installing.
Split Blur 1.5.0, released on September 9, 2025, introduced the Twirl Angle feature, which applies adaptive rotation based on luminosity and its corresponding Twirl Curve settings. The update also added a Twirl Intensity Source so the twirl can be driven from a different layer instead of the input image, extended the upper limit of the Blur Level parameter to 2048 in the value field, and gave the graphs adaptive colours that follow the selected colour theme in After Effects.
Split Blur can take the depth map of a 3D render or footage as an intensity source rather than relying only on the input image's own luminance. Its curve controls then define how pixel luminosity maps to blur distance, and Curve Floor sets a minimum split distance. The Twirl Intensity Source added in version 1.5.0 similarly lets a separate layer drive the twirl portion of the effect.
Split Blur is listed as free in this catalog, so no price appears on this page. For the current licensing terms, download options, and any registration requirements, check Satori's page on aescripts. Note that unregistered versions historically showed a watermark-related issue on compositions taller than 4096 pixels, which was fixed in version 1.3.1, so confirming a properly registered copy through the developer is worthwhile before you rely on it in production.
