Why we like it

vAEriable ranks 73 on aescripts and keeps calculation work in After Effects, pulling sizes and dimensions straight from masks, layers, comps, and footage.

What is vAEriable?

vAEriable is a calculation script for After Effects. You can enter values by hand or load them directly from the timeline, then solve arithmetic, algebra, and cross-multiplication.

Values can be pulled from several sources. A selected mask loads its bounding-box size, a selected layer loads its size, and a selected comp or footage item in the Project panel loads its dimensions. The panel also handles values that are arrays and can copy either the true value or the absolute value of an answer.

Version 1.1.0 adds a one-click compare feature: with the top fields empty, select two keyframes or matching properties across layers and click Calculate to open a window comparing the values. A standalone script, Calc-vAEr.jsxbin, runs the compare function without the panel and can be tied to a hotkey or used with KBar. vAEriable supports After Effects 2026 through 2020, and a demo video is available.

Who is vAEriable best for?

vAEriable is best for after Effects users who run arithmetic, algebra, or cross-multiplication calculations and want to load values, sizes, and dimensions directly from the timeline and Project panel.

How much does vAEriable cost?

vAEriable is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does vAEriable support?

vAEriable supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, covering seven releases. The current version is 1.1.0, last updated in July 2026. If you run one of these versions, the script should install and run as described on the developer's page. For any version outside this range, check the developer's page on aescripts before installing to confirm current compatibility, since supported versions can shift with later updates.

Is vAEriable free to download?

vAEriable is listed as free here. Pricing and licensing terms can change over time, so it's worth checking the developer's page on aescripts for the current details before downloading. The package includes the main vAEriable panel along with a standalone script, Calc-vAEr.jsxbin, which runs the compare function without opening the panel and can be tied to a hotkey or used with KBar.

How does vAEriable's one-click compare feature work?

vAEriable's compare feature, added in version 1.1.0, works when the top fields in the panel are empty. Select two keyframes or matching properties across layers, click the top Calculate button, and a window pops up comparing the values. The same function is also available as Calc-vAEr.jsxbin, a standalone script that runs the comparison without the vAEriable panel and can be tied to a hotkey or used with KBar.

Can vAEriable load a layer or comp size automatically?

vAEriable can load several sizes automatically. A selected mask loads its bounding-box size, a selected layer loads its size, and a selected comp or footage item in the Project panel loads its dimensions. It also handles values that are arrays and can copy either the true value or the absolute value of an answer. These loaded values feed the arithmetic, algebra, and cross-multiplication tools.
