Why we like it

AutoBlend stands out in the superhive library as a screen-space blending approach that stays independent from scene complexity and materials, driven entirely through the Compositor and Cryptomatte. Its masking options, including Noise, Voronoi and custom masks, aim at more organic results. Worth keeping the documented limitations in mind, particularly around Cycles and screen-space artifacts. A demo video is available.

What is Autoblend?

AutoBlend is a Blender add-on from specoolar that blends objects in screen-space using the Compositor and Cryptomatte. It runs as a post-processing effect, which keeps it independent from scene complexity and materials. You can blend any number of objects and any type of material apart from transparent ones, and there is no need to modify meshes or materials — you only choose which materials to blend.

The add-on works with both EEVEE and Cycles, though Cycles carries some limitations: realtime preview, depth of field and motion blur are not supported directly, and depth of field can be recreated with the compositor's defocus node and motion blur with the vector blur node. For more organic results, you can use Noise, Voronoi or custom masks, with auto setup available for the Noise and Voronoi masks.

As a screen-space effect, AutoBlend can show artifacts such as fading when another object blocks the view or flickering when the blending distance is too large, so a smaller distance is recommended. The effect cannot be exported to game engines or baked, and blending between instances of the same object is not supported. It requires Blender 4.5 or newer and is compatible up to Blender 5.0.

Who is Autoblend best for?

Autoblend is best for blending objects together in screen-space inside Blender as a post-processing pass in EEVEE or Cycles, without altering meshes or materials.

How much does Autoblend cost?

Autoblend is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does AutoBlend work with Blender 5.0?

AutoBlend requires Blender 4.5 or newer, and version 1.1.1 added compatibility with Blender 5.0, giving a supported range of 4.5 to 5.0. The add-on relies on the Compositor and Cryptomatte to blend objects in screen-space. If you are running a release older than 4.5, you would need to update Blender before installing. For the current supported versions, check the developer's page.

Does AutoBlend work in both Cycles and EEVEE?

AutoBlend works with both EEVEE and Cycles as a post-processing effect. In Cycles there are some limitations: realtime preview, depth of field and motion blur are not supported directly, though you can recreate depth of field in the compositor with the defocus node and motion blur with the vector blur node. Because it is a screen-space effect, it can show artifacts such as fading when another object blocks the view, or flickering when the blending distance is too large, so keeping that distance smaller is recommended.

Can AutoBlend blend transparent materials?

AutoBlend can blend any number of objects and any type of material, with one exception: transparent materials are not supported. You choose which materials to blend without modifying the meshes or materials themselves. Another constraint to note is that blending between instances of the same object is not supported. For organic results, the add-on can use Noise, Voronoi or custom masks. If transparency is central to your setup, that portion falls outside what the add-on handles.

Can AutoBlend results be exported to game engines or baked?

AutoBlend produces its result as a post-processing effect through the Compositor, so it cannot be exported to game engines or baked. It also does not require modifying meshes or materials. If your pipeline depends on baked or exportable geometry, this add-on would not carry the effect into those formats. For workflows staying inside Blender's render and compositing, it applies without altering the source objects.

Is AutoBlend free, and what license does it use?

AutoBlend is listed as free in this catalog, so no price appears here. It is distributed under the GPL license and is available as a Blender add-on that is also noted as Blender Extension compatible. For current licensing terms or any purchase details, check the developer's page. The developer also provides documentation, and a demo video is available for the add-on.
