Earns its place for keeping the character-blocking stage inside Blender, then handing off a remeshed mesh to your sculpting tool of choice.
BlocksurfacesLITE is the Blender 4 edition of AitToolsB's BlockSurfaces, aimed at blocking 3D characters. It suits both beginners and advanced users in character art, and works for characters ranging from the simplest to the most complex. The approach builds a character from general to specific: establish the main volumes first, then add detail through sculpting.
You create the main volumes using branches and basic shapes such as cubes or spheres, then edit, move, rotate, scale, and sculpt the objects that make up each branch. The branch connects the shapes within it from one object to the next. You can duplicate branches or parts of them, test different compositions, and pose characters without rigging knowledge. The blocking captures a character's proportions and pose and generates a remeshed mesh, which you can import into your preferred sculpting program or use as a base for retopology.
This LITE version does not include muscles or floating panels; those belong to the full version. Documentation is included, and the developer's YouTube channel hosts more than 100 videos covering timelapses, tutorials, and a full manual.
Blocksurfaceslite is best for artists blocking out character models in Blender before moving to a sculpting program.
Blocksurfaceslite is completely free to download and use.
BlocksurfacesLITE is the version of BlockSurfaces released for Blender 4, so it targets that release line. It handles the blocking stage of character modeling: you build the main volumes with branches and basic shapes, then generate a remeshed mesh. That mesh can move into your preferred sculpting program or serve as a base for retopology. For availability on other Blender versions, check the developer's page.
BlocksurfacesLITE leaves out some capabilities found in the full BlockSurfaces. Specifically, this LITE version does not include muscles or any floating panels, both of which belong to the full release. The core blocking workflow remains: creating main volumes with branches and basic shapes, editing and sculpting branch objects, duplicating branches, posing without rigging, and generating a mesh to sculpt or retopologize. To compare the two editions feature by feature, visit the developer's page.
BlocksurfacesLITE is listed as free in this catalog. Documentation is included with the addon, and the developer maintains a YouTube channel with more than 100 videos covering timelapses, tutorials, and a full manual video that explains each option in each panel. For the current licensing terms and to grab the download, head to the developer's page rather than relying on a fixed figure here.
BlocksurfacesLITE is built for the blocking stage, capturing a character's proportions and pose and generating a remeshed mesh. That final mesh can be imported into your favorite sculpting program so you can continue the model there, adding detail once the base shapes are solid. You can also use the generated mesh as a base for retopology. The workflow moves from general to specific, establishing volumes first and refining afterward.
