Why we like it

Crease-Preserving Extrude fills a narrow but real gap: it automates the crease reassignment that would otherwise be manual after every extrusion. It runs across most Alt+E extrude operations, supports Blender 3.4 through 4.5, and is distributed under the GPL license.

What is Crease-Preserving Extrude Blender Addon?

Crease-Preserving Extrude adds a crease-aware extrusion mode to Blender's modeling workflow. It offers two options: Extrude with Crease and Extrude (Default). With Extrude with Crease selected, newly generated edges inherit crease values from neighboring edges through a built-in algorithm, working across vertex, edge and face extrude operations. Extrude (Default) matches Blender's built-in extrude.

The built-in algorithm carries over the crease value of the neighboring edge whose direction aligns most closely with the new edge. If that value isn't the one you want, the Crease Value Picker lists the potential crease values from neighboring edges that share a vertex with the new edge, letting you choose a different one. Apply Directional Crease offers another route: extrude with the default operation, refine using the Adjust Last Operation Panel, then apply the crease based on neighboring edges.

Mode switching happens from the sidebar panel. The add-on works with most operations under the Alt+E menu in vertex, edge and face select modes, though Extrude Repeat and Spin under face extrude are not supported. It is aimed at hard surface modeling and edge loop work.

Who is Crease-Preserving Extrude Blender Addon best for?

Crease-Preserving Extrude Blender Addon is best for hard surface modeling and edge loop work in Blender where keeping crease values consistent after each extrusion matters.

How much does Crease-Preserving Extrude Blender Addon cost?

Crease-Preserving Extrude Blender Addon is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Extrude with Crease mode lets newly generated edges inherit crease values from neighboring edges, working for vertex, edge and face extrude operations
  • Crease Value Picker lists the potential crease values from edges sharing a vertex with the new edge, so you can select a different value
  • Apply Directional Crease adds a crease based on neighboring edges after a default extrude adjusted via the Adjust Last Operation Panel
  • One-click switching between default and crease-preserving extrusion from the sidebar panel
  • Works with most Alt+E operations in vertex, edge and face select modes; Extrude Repeat and Spin under face extrude are excluded
  • Direction-based algorithm inherits the crease from the most closely aligned neighboring edge

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does Crease-Preserving Extrude support?

Crease-Preserving Extrude supports Blender versions 3.4 through 4.5. It is listed for use with the Cycles and Eevee render engines and is distributed under the GPL license. Within that version range, the crease-preserving extrude modes, the Crease Value Picker and Apply Directional Crease are available, and mode switching is handled from the sidebar panel. For the latest compatibility details before installing, check the developer's page on superhive.

Does Crease-Preserving Extrude work with all Alt+E extrude operations?

Crease-Preserving Extrude works with most of the operations under the Alt+E menu in vertex, edge and face select modes. That coverage includes the Extrude with Crease mode, the Crease Value Picker and Apply Directional Crease. Two operations are not supported: Extrude Repeat and Spin under face extrude do not work with the add-on. For everything else in the Alt+E menu, newly generated edges can inherit crease values from their neighbors, and you can override the inherited value when needed.

What if the automatically inherited crease value isn't the one I want?

Crease-Preserving Extrude assigns crease values automatically using a built-in algorithm that carries over the crease of the neighboring edge whose direction aligns most closely with the new edge. When that value isn't the one you expected, the Crease Value Picker lists the potential crease values from edges that share a vertex with the newly generated edge, and you can select the one you want. The same picker is available after using Apply Directional Crease, so you are not locked into the automatic result.

Is Crease-Preserving Extrude free?

Crease-Preserving Extrude is listed as free in this catalog, though it is distributed under the GPL license by YU_Design. Licensing and availability can change, so check the developer's page on superhive for the current terms before downloading. The GPL license generally allows use, modification and redistribution under its conditions. A demo video is also available if you want to look at the add-on before installing.
