Why we like it

Documentation is provided, and a demo video is available. The developer also lists planned updates, including a location mover for the Landscape Mover Empty and a new displacement layer.

What is Dynamic Landscapes?

Dynamic Landscapes lets you create a landscape object in Blender by selecting a material, a base-height texture and a sub-height texture, then pressing "Create Function Mesh". A live update of the result appears in the viewport, and you control the landscape through an Empty and a dedicated panel in the 3D View. The pack ships with two simple material presets.

A settings panel exposes subdivisions, strengths and mid-level values. A Ramp option makes textures behave more like a step function for a less smooth, more stylised look, and two Clean Up options enable further effects like dissolving. You can smooth your landscapes, and combining smoothing with the dissolve option often produces interesting results. Base-height and sub-height textures can be edited from the Texture Properties, where the color ramp option can also be activated.

Deformer objects can be added and configured with mapping distances, influence and falloff, up to a maximum of twenty, and can be animated to update the landscape. The pack includes a modified version of the developer's Deformer add-on. Moving or animating the "Landscape Mover" Empty, a child of the landscape object, changes the landscape.

Who is Dynamic Landscapes best for?

Dynamic Landscapes is best for blender artists building procedural, animatable landscapes with live viewport feedback.

How much does Dynamic Landscapes cost?

Dynamic Landscapes is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Dynamic Landscapes support?

Dynamic Landscapes lists support for Blender 2.93 and 3. If you run a different release, check the developer's page for current compatibility details before you download it. The add-on works inside Blender itself, creating a landscape object you control through an Empty and a panel in the 3D View, with a live update shown in the viewport as you adjust settings.

How many deformer objects can I use in Dynamic Landscapes?

Dynamic Landscapes supports a maximum of twenty deformer objects. You add them by pressing "Add" and selecting an object such as a cube or something more complex, then set the mapping distances, influence and falloff function. Deformer objects can be animated, which updates the landscape. Note that they must be set before applying the modifiers, so plan your deformers ahead of that step in your workflow.

How do the Clean Up options work in Dynamic Landscapes?

Dynamic Landscapes includes two Clean Up options that enable further effects like dissolving. Because dissolve produces N-Gons that are not flat, the Clean Up reduces their number and intensity. The developer notes the first Clean Up works better than the second. You can also smooth landscapes, and combining smoothing with the dissolve option often produces interesting results in the final outcome.

Is Dynamic Landscapes free?

Dynamic Landscapes is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current details before you download or rely on it for a project. The pack includes documentation to help you get started, along with two simple material presets and a modified version of the developer's Deformer add-on.
