Why we like it

Face Cutter earns its place in the Superhive library by bringing snapping-point cuts to ngons and non-planar faces, something Blender's Ctrl R loop cut doesn't handle. Its keyboard-driven workflow, from Full Width Mode to Easy Edit and symmetric copy, covers a range of cutting cases in one tool.

What is Face Cutter?

Face Cutter is a modeling tool for Blender built for cutting ngon faces. It cuts perpendicular lines, or rotated ones, on a selected face using snapping points that you define. Set the number of divisions, then cut by lines, or cut through the whole mesh with Blender's Knife projection API. It works similarly to Ctrl R but also handles ngons, and the developer notes it offers more functionality than Blender's built-in K knife tool.

You work in Edit mode: select one or more faces, open the right-click context menu, and choose Face Cutter. From there you can define a cut-line by two points, rotate it by angle, or align it to any nearby edge. Additional modes include Full Width Mode for using a full side across multiple faces, Easy Edit mode for clicking snapping points directly, symmetric copy to mirror lines, and a cut-and-break-apart option. Selecting faces with different normals projects the cut onto them.

If you scaled the object in Object Mode, apply the scale transform before using Face Cutter, otherwise it may cause problems. The tool has been updated to work with Blender 4.0.0.

Who is Face Cutter best for?

Face Cutter is best for general modeling tasks in Blender that involve cutting ngon faces and non-planar faces, including cut-through and corner cuts.

How much does Face Cutter cost?

Face Cutter is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Cut perpendicular or rotated lines on a selected face using snapping points, with a user-set number of divisions.
  • Cut through the whole mesh with Blender's Knife projection API, with an option to limit the cut to linked faces.
  • Define a cut-line by two points, rotate it by angle, or align it to any nearby edge.
  • Full Width Mode uses the full side, all co-linear edges, when working across multiple faces.
  • Easy Edit mode shows all snapping points so you can click to create cutting lines, including diagonals between edges.
  • Cut and break apart into solid pieces, plus symmetric copy to mirror cutting lines to another side.
  • Works on ngons and on non-planar faces, where the cut is projected onto the faces.

Frequently asked questions

Does Face Cutter work with Blender 4.0?

Face Cutter was updated to work with Blender 4.0.0, and versions 1.9.0 and 1.10.0 fixed a bug caused by a Blender API change. The most recent listed version is 1.10.2, which fixed a minor bug, while version 1.10.1 moved the on-screen text to the left-hand side. For the full range of supported Blender versions and the latest build, check the developer's page, since compatibility can shift with new Blender releases.

How do I access Face Cutter in Blender?

Face Cutter runs in Edit mode. Select a face or multiple faces, then right-click to open the context menu and choose Face Cutter at the bottom. From there you select an edge, set cutting points on the snapping points, and press Q to execute the cut or R to cut through the mesh. You can adjust the number of snapping points with Ctrl and the mouse wheel, the square bracket keys, or the number keys 1 to 9.

Does Face Cutter work on ngons?

Face Cutter is designed for cutting ngon faces, which sets it apart from Blender's Ctrl R loop cut that doesn't work on ngons. It also handles non-planar faces: when you select faces with different normals, the cut is projected onto them, and you choose one face for alignment by moving the cursor near it. The developer notes it provides more functionality than Blender's built-in K knife tool.

How does Face Cutter cut through the whole mesh?

Face Cutter cuts through the whole mesh when you press R, using Blender's Knife projection API. Press Shift and R to limit the cut to linked faces only. You can also press T to cut through and break the mesh apart into solid pieces, or Shift and T to limit that cut-and-break to linked geometry. Cutting lines can be filled across snapping points with F, rotated with Z, X, C, or V, and aligned to an edge with A.

Is Face Cutter free to download?

Face Cutter is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing terms and any conditions attached to the download, check the developer's page on Superhive, since terms can change over time. One note from the developer worth knowing before you start: if you scaled your object in Object Mode, apply the scale transform first, otherwise Face Cutter may run into problems.
