Why we like it

Group It stands out in the ScriptSpot library for extending standard 3ds Max grouping with orientation inheritance, configurable naming, and pivot control. A no-UI variant is available for anyone who prefers to skip the interface.

What is Group It?

Group It is a script for 3ds Max that builds a group from the objects you have selected. The resulting group inherits its orientation from the first selected object, and the script supports nested groups.

Naming is configurable: you can add a prefix drawn from the first selected object's layer name, or type a specific name for the group. Left empty, the group takes the same name it would receive from the standard 3ds Max group function. You can also choose where the group pivot is placed and whether the selected objects are moved into the same layer as the first selected object.

The current release is version 1.4.9. A version without a UI is also available; by default it places the pivot at the base and keeps every group member in the same layer. The script was tested on 3ds Max 2024 and should work on any 3ds Max version. It is listed here as free.

Who is Group It best for?

Group It is best for 3ds Max users who want more control over how selected objects are grouped, including orientation, naming, pivot placement, and layer assignment.

How much does Group It cost?

Group It is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Group It work with 3ds Max 2024?

Group It was tested on 3ds Max 2024, according to the developer. The developer also notes it should be fine on any 3ds Max version, though 2024 is the one confirmed by testing. If you are running a different release, it is worth checking the behaviour on your own setup, and the developer's page is the place to confirm the latest compatibility details. The current version listed here is 1.4.9, so make sure you are working from that build.

What naming options does Group It offer?

Group It lets you add a prefix based on the first selected object's layer name, and it also lets you type a specific name for the group. If you leave the name field empty, the group is named the same way it would be if created with the standard 3ds Max group function. These naming choices were added in the later 1.4.x updates, giving you a few ways to label a group at the moment you create it.

Where does Group It place the group pivot?

Group It includes an option to choose where the group pivot is placed. In the no-UI version, the pivot defaults to the base and every group member is placed in the same layer. There is also an option to have the selected objects end up in the same layer as the first selected object. The new group inherits its orientation from that first selected object as well, so the pivot placement is configurable while the orientation follows the first object you select.

Is there a version of Group It without a user interface?

Group It comes in a no-UI version alongside the standard one, distributed as an .mcr file. In the no-UI version, the pivot defaults to base placement and every member of the group is put into the same layer. This gives you the grouping behaviour with those defaults already set, without adjusting the options each time. You can find the no-UI download through the developer's page, and the current version of the script is 1.4.9.

Is Group It free?

Group It is listed here as free. For current licensing and download details, the developer's page is the best place to check. The script is provided as an .mcr file that you download and install, and the version listed here is 1.4.9. Licensing terms and availability can change over time, so it is worth confirming on the developer's page before you rely on the script in a production project.
