Why we like it

Mesh Designer earns its place in the superhive library by bringing Maya-style construction history to Blender primitives, keeping parameters editable and animatable throughout the modeling process.

What is Mesh Designer?

Mesh Designer brings procedural primitives with construction history to Blender, an approach similar to Maya. It covers grid, cube, circle, ICO and UV sphere, cylinder, cone, torus, gear, and folder primitives for objects or collections. Every parameter can be changed, including size, vertex count, radius, height, hole size, and axis, and any primitive can be replaced by another or duplicated as you work.

Two editions are available. The Lite version includes all Mesh Designer primitives with construction history, an automatically added material, and the ability to apply objects. The Studio version adds Mesh Design, the import of external objects or collections, and pre-parametered deformers such as Extrude, Inset, Bevel, Taper, Stretch, Bend, Vanish, Noise, Poke, Dual, Crease, and Smooth, plus pre and post transformations.

All parameters can be animated, and both editions let you create and change a design during the modeling process. It suits modeling characters, architecture, motion design, and experimental designs. Objects can't be edited in edit mode during creation, and once applied the shape is final.

Who is Mesh Designer best for?

Mesh Designer is best for modeling characters, architecture, motion design, and experimental designs in Blender.

How much does Mesh Designer cost?

Mesh Designer is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Procedural primitives with construction history similar to Maya: grid, cube, circle, ICO and UV sphere, cylinder, cone, torus, gear, and folder
  • Every parameter is editable, including size, vertex count, radius, height, hole size, and axis
  • Primitives can be replaced by another or duplicated during your work
  • Studio version adds pre-parametered deformers: Extrude, Inset, Bevel, Taper, Stretch, Bend, Vanish, Noise, Poke, Dual, Crease, Smooth, plus pre and post transformations
  • Studio version imports external objects or collections, including other modifiable Mesh Designer objects
  • All parameters can be animated
  • A simple material is automatically added to each Mesh Designer object

Frequently asked questions

Does Mesh Designer work with Blender 4.2?

Mesh Designer lists compatibility with Blender 4.2, 4.1, and 4.0, and is marked as a Blender extension-compatible add-on. Its changelog notes that version 1.0.1 became fully compatible with Blender 4.2, and version 1.0.2 updated the icons to work with the latest Blender versions. If you're on one of these releases, the add-on should slot into your setup. For any version outside this range, check the developer's page before installing.

What render engines does Mesh Designer support?

Mesh Designer is listed for use with Cycles and Eevee, as well as Blender Internal and the Blender Game Engine. The add-on focuses on building and animating procedural primitives with construction history, so the models it produces can be rendered through any of these engines. A simple material is automatically added to each Mesh Designer object, giving you a starting point regardless of which render engine you take the result into.

What's the difference between the Lite and Studio versions of Mesh Designer?

Mesh Designer comes in two editions. The Lite version, intended for personal usage, includes all Mesh Designer primitives with construction history, an automatically added material, and the ability to apply objects. The Studio version adds Mesh Design, the option to import external objects or collections, and a set of pre-parametered deformers including Extrude, Inset, Bevel, Taper, Stretch, Bend, Vanish, Noise, Poke, Dual, Crease, and Smooth, along with pre and post transformations. Both editions let you create and change a design during the modeling process.

Can I edit Mesh Designer objects in edit mode during creation?

Mesh Designer keeps its primitives procedural with construction history, so parameters like size, vertex count, radius, height, hole size, and axis stay editable throughout. During the creation process, though, you can't edit objects in edit mode, and once the shape is applied it becomes final. If you need that kind of manual mesh editing, plan to apply the object first and continue from there. Until then, every parameter remains adjustable and can also be animated.

Is Mesh Designer free to use?

Mesh Designer is listed as free in this catalog. The developer offers Lite and Studio editions with different feature sets and usage terms, so for current licensing details it's best to check the developer's page directly. The add-on is distributed under the GPL license. Whichever edition you use, both include construction-history primitives with an automatically added material and the ability to create and change designs during the modeling process.
