Why we like it

Network Clipboard earns its place in the toolfarm library for cutting studio collaboration down to a copy and a paste, moving elements between four host applications across a network instead of exporting reduced projects.

What is Network Clipboard?

Network Clipboard is a copy-and-paste tool from Matt Tillman that moves comps, layers, nodes and scenes between Maya, After Effects, Cinema 4D and Houdini across a network. Select what you want, press copy, and anyone else in the studio can paste it straight into their scene. It handles layers, comps, lights, geometry, cameras and nodes, animated or static, without saving out reduced projects to share with a team.

Copies can go into a project or directly into the active comp, and the copy history can be stored as long as you like, with any item available to paste back. After Effects gains FBX support, and the clipboard directory can be set through an environment variable. The username on copies can be overridden, and floating license support is included.

It runs with After Effects from CC 2017 through 2025, Cinema 4D from R19 through 2025, Houdini 17 to 21, and Maya 2018 to 2023. A demo video is available on the developer's page.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does Network Clipboard support?

Network Clipboard supports After Effects from CC 2017, CC 2018 and CC 2019 through the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 releases. On the After Effects side it also adds FBX support, and copies can be pasted into a project or directly into the active comp. For Cinema 4D the plugin covers R19 through 2025, so mixed After Effects and Cinema 4D pipelines on those versions can exchange elements across a network.

Does Network Clipboard work with Maya and Houdini?

Network Clipboard works with Maya 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023, and with Houdini 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21. Maya support arrived in version 2.4.0 with both Python 2 and Python 3, and Houdini 19 support was added in 2.3.0. Alongside After Effects and Cinema 4D, this lets comps, layers, nodes and scenes move between all four applications across a network.

How does the copy history in Network Clipboard work?

Network Clipboard stores your copy history for as long as you like, and any item in that history can be pasted back later. When copying, you choose whether to paste into a project or straight into the active comp. The clipboard directory can be set with an environment variable, and the username shown on copies can be overridden. Floating license support is also included.

Is Network Clipboard free to use?

Network Clipboard is listed as free here in our catalog. Because licensing and commercial terms can change, check Matt Tillman's developer page for the current details before downloading. The tool includes floating license support. It works across After Effects, Cinema 4D, Houdini and Maya, copying comps, layers, nodes and scenes between them over a network, and copies can go into a project or directly into the active comp.
