Stands out in the blender_extensions library for handling both NLA action copying and Graph Editor keyframe generation, with MIDI settings kept separate between the two editors and a button to copy them across.
NLA Midi Copier adds MIDI-driven tools to two Blender editors. In the Nonlinear Animation view, you open the Midi panel, select a MIDI file, pick an object and an action, then click Copy Action to Notes to line up action strips with the notes in the file. Filters give control over which notes actions are copied to, and the Quick Copy Tools section copies actions to multiple notes at once.
In the Graph Editor, the add-on generates keyframes on existing F-Curves from MIDI data. You select an F-Curve, choose the lowest and highest pitches, pick a unit type and Min and Max values, then generate keyframes. Calculations can use all pitches, only the notes in a selected track, or only notes in a scale, and keyframes can also be based on properties other than pitch. Limit transition length inserts extra keyframes to cap transition time.
The Midi Settings panel lets you override which C is middle C, the file tempo, and displayed track names. The Midi Instruments panel copies multiple stored actions at once, and separate Other Tools generate transition strips and rename actions.
NLA Midi Copier is best for blender artists syncing animation to MIDI files, either by copying action strips to notes in the NLA editor or generating keyframes from MIDI data in the Graph Editor.
NLA Midi Copier is completely free to download and use.
NLA Midi Copier lists compatibility with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so current 4.2 installs and later releases are covered. The add-on is version 1.2.0 and was last updated on September 16th, 2024. It can be added by dragging the download into Blender or installing from disk. For details on what every button and selection does, the developer keeps a README on GitHub, which is worth checking against your specific Blender version before starting a project.
NLA Midi Copier requests one permission: reading MIDI files from disk. That access is needed so it can load the MIDI file you select in the Midi panel and use its note data, either to copy actions to notes in the Nonlinear Animation view or to generate keyframes on F-Curves in the Graph Editor. No other permissions are listed for the extension, and the MIDI file drives both the NLA and Graph Editor workflows once it is loaded.
NLA Midi Copier is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and is listed as free here. For current licensing and any terms, check the developer's page on GitHub, where the source, issue tracker, and README are hosted. The add-on can be added by dragging the download into Blender or installing it from disk, and its download size is listed at 112.8 KB.
NLA Midi Copier generates Graph Editor keyframes by reading MIDI data against an existing F-Curve. You select an F-Curve, set the lowest and highest pitches to use, choose a unit type, and set Min and Max values for the keyframes to generate, then click Generate Keyframes. Calculations can use all pitches, only the notes in a selected track, or only notes in a scale, and keyframes can also be based on properties other than pitch. Limit transition length inserts extra keyframes to cap transition time.
NLA Midi Copier keeps the NLA editor and Graph Editor MIDI settings completely separate, so a MIDI file loaded in one does not automatically load in the other. When a file is loaded in the NLA editor, a button appears next to the Choose midi file button in the Graph Editor that copies the NLA editor MIDI settings across, and the same works in the other direction. The Midi Settings panel itself is the same in both editors.
